SLS & SLES are widely used in shampoos to create foam. SLES can be very irritating to the skin and scalp and can cause hair loss. SLS is capable of penetrating the eyes and systemic tissues, which is especially serious with infants delicate eyes, which have even greater absorption and may be susceptible to alteration by SLS. Its retention properties are long-term and are of particular concern to infants whose eyes are undergoing substantial growth because a much greater absorption occurs in tissues of younger eyes. SLS changes the amounts of some proteins in cells of eye tissues. Tissues of young eyes may be more susceptible to alteration by SLS.
Because SLS forms nitrates, a possible carcinogen, and it is used in shampoos, bubble baths, shower gels as well as facial cleansers, Dr. David H. Fine, a chemical contaminate specialists, estimates that a person would be applying 50 to 100 micrograms of nitrosamine to the skin with each application. By comparison, a person consuming sodium nitrite-perserved bacon is exposed to less than 1 microgram.
But not everything that starts with "Sodium L-a-u-r-" is dangerous. Little Forest has chosen to use Sodium Laurate and Sodium Lareth-13 Carboxylate as foaming agents in our shampoos. They produce a much lower foam, but just enough so that mothers will be assured that they are getting their baby's hair clean. With the lower foam, they are gentle and mild on baby's scalp and eyes.
Be aware that some manufacturers hide their use of Lauryl by calling it "coco Betaine," which may sound more natural but isn't. There are a number of ingredients that are chemically derived from Coconut, including Lauryl, Caprillic, Pametic, Cetyl, and Stearyl. Coco Betaine is the same as a mix of all of these.

Wow! The things I learn here and never would have thought twice about! So what are some shampoos for babies that do not contain this? Does Dr. Bronners?

Yeah, Sodium Laurel and Sodium Laureth are the same.
I posted a link to it in the toothpaste thread the other day......Tom's of Maine has it in their toothpaste, and in their Baby Shampoo.
We only use the California Baby, if I use anything with sodium Laur....anything, ds breaks out in excema. IMHO, I think it is all them same, and you will find contradiction info from company to company....they really are all after the almighty dollar, and will and can contort any and all information to mislead the public.
What about WAHM soaps and shampoo bars? I just ordered a *bunch* of stuff from Danica and I'm hoping that it will be free of this stuff. Hmmm, perhaps I should PM her and ask.

nope, not a drop mama .
not even my diaper buddies or laundry soaps have it. i must admit it has been tough avoiding it...it is a "magic bullet" that allows foam to stay a long time. it is very tempting to use it in the laundry soap but i just have to go with my instincts and steer clear.
the thing is, bubbles don't have a whole heck of a lot to do with cleansing. it doesn't matter, we are so conditioned to believe that anything that doesn't bubble up instantly and persist in a foamy lather is thought to be an inferior product. it is especially tough to get liquid soaps to sustain a frothy, foamy lather.
soap is a salt that attracts water on one side and oil on the other, bubbles are created by "catching" hydrogen.
So ammonium laurel sulfate is OK? That is in my Aveda shampoo. I know probably uncrunchy shampoo but it smells so nice and isn't tested in animals LOL.
And WAAHHH! Not my Tom's of Maine! Now I'm out to find another toothpaste. We do use floridated toothpaste so it's gonna be a challenge. Huh.
