i have another ?

in the what makes you crunchy thread some said they dont use drano or anything like that...so what do you use instead when your drain is clogged? we have this problem often.

also, why don't you use tylenol? what do you use for pain relief for headaches, teething, etc?

just curious!

there are natural headache tablets but the main cause of headaches is dehydration.

I use vinegar and baking soda for drains, and hot water also. I also have one of those snake thingies. I have hip length ultra thick hair, so we get alot of drain clogs, lol!

And for headaches we use homeopathic tablets, or herbs. Fever Few is awsome for headaches. Hylands makes an awsome cold tablet for children. And their teething tablets are GREAT!!

HTH!

Is it odd that we've never ever had a clogged drain??? What do they get clogged with?? Hair?? I have a ton of thick hair and I shed a lot, but we've enever had that problem... Hmm....

We won't use bleach or any other toxic substances in our house...

And we use homeopathics as well... Or we look to the root of the problem. Like Becca said, if I ever get a headache, it's generally because I'm dehydrated. (A little tip, if your pee is anything but clear, you're probably dehydrated!)

My BF and I both have long hair and we get a clogged drain every few months. I think it has to do with shaving in the shower (one day I may nix shaving, but I can't stand itching under my arms).

We use a plunger and tweezers to unclog the drain.

I will admit that I sometimes use ibuprofen to ease a headache or an ache now and then. Most of the time I use a cold compress or try massage/reflexology.

I honestly can't remember the last time we had a drain get plugged. DH will clean out the trap under the tub about 2x per year--just pulls all the hair out.

A plunger is a great thing to have around tho.

And I put baking soda and vinegar in my kitchen sink drain every week when I am cleaning.

HTH!!

We use one of those long wire 'snakes' for drains.
Also, I kept clogging the drain with my hair, so dh bought a little silver thing you put in the drain to catch the hair.

Also, we have a handy plunger.

We did have to use something when we moved in to de-clog the drain.
It was all natural enzymes. It was in a black bottle with an orange on the front???

No tylenol here.
(Our children have never had an OTC or prescription med... I have been drug free for about 7 years...)

We use white willow bark or valerian.
You can buy herbal pain relief formulas for adults and children.

Hope

edited for why we do not use medicine:
When your body has a headache (or other problem), it is usually a symptom.
When you treat the symptom with a drug, you are not fixing the problem, just supressing the symptom.
Over time, this can lead to greater problems.
When I have a headache, it usually means I am stressed or (eek) constipated. (sorry to be crude!)
I could take a tylenol, but it is not going to make my stress go away or make me use the bathroom!

i never would have thought to use vinegar and baking soda. next time instead of the drano i will try that. we have a little thing to go in the drain to catch the hair too but it still gets clogged for some reason.

i hardly ever take tylenol myself, i'm just not big on medicines period. i only take them if i am in a lot of pain...just a personal thing. i don't like taking pills. i do give my kids infant tylenol though, to lia for teething and to both when they had colds and were miserable (i wasn't sure of any other options at the time, and it did seem to help!). what could i give them next time instead of the tylenol??? suggestions? i'd like to nix the meds if possible.

dh on the other hand is a pill junkie and takes tylenol at the least sign of headache

For clogged drains I clean the hair wookie out.

For teething we use hyland's teething tablets (for Ara) or hyland's teething gel (for Simone, tablets don't work for her). For cold's we don't use anything, for fevers we don't use anything (I believe fevers should run their course, you aren't doing them any favors by reducing a fever, only prolonging the illness). For headaches I drink water. For pains from bumps, bruises, etc we either rub on homeopathic arnica gel or take arnica tablets. These also work for headaches, but I only get headaches from dehydration.

Forgot to add - we don't use tylenol because it is toxic to your liver. It never leaves your body, it is just stored in your liver. After 200 doses you've had the most your body is suppose to be able to handle in it's lifetime. Think how many kids have had that much by the time they are 2.

Right, Allison!

An herbalist was telling me about a 'cold sheet treatment'.
From Dr. Christopher I believe.
Involves taking a HOT bath with detox herbs, getting out and wrapping your body in a cold sheet and resting.

Supposed to help bring out all the stored toxins.
She said when you un-wrap the sheet, it will be covered with all the colors you have ever consumed (drugs. food)

Hope

I love this site. Here is the more natural way to clean drains (baking soda and vinegar as mentioned already) plus a whole bunch of other natural cleaning tips.
http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/home/113

I'm going to dito what others said about headaches being a symptom and tylenol masking it and not fixing the real problem. I use chiropractic adjustmnents to fix my headaches because for me, i know that sublaxations in my neck are the cause.

For teething I tried frozen wash cloths, teething toys or massage baby's gums before giving hylands. I think this time i may try rescue remedy or chamomile tea to calm baby before trying hylands tablets.

Does anyone know a website with more info about this tylenol thing? I never knew that! I rarely take it ( or anything for that matter) and rarely give it to ds, dd has never had anything but teething gel once and I am not so sure I would give it again. Thanks mamas, I learn so much here!! Kate

nak, There is also the cold sock treatment to rev up the immune system:
Put feet in VERY hot water for a few minutes
Then, take them out of the water and put on cooton socks that have been soaking in ice water
Put dry wool socks over the top and wear as long as you can (sleep in them overnight if possible)

We've done this to Ely and it helps for colds and the flu.

Also, we use Sambucol or Elderberry tea for anti-viral stuff. Dh and I do use Olive Leaf if we get something nasty. Kicks it out of the system real quick.

For teething, I use homeopathic remedies (Chamomilla, Calc Phos, Pulsatilla) or diluted Chamomille tea that is frozen into a popcicle.

I haven't had to deal with clogged drains. Every couple of weeks, I put some yeast and warm water down our drains to help with the septic system and to keep the pipes clear.
