Non fiction I would recommend:

THE WAR AGAINST CLICHE-by Martin Amis. Son of Kingsley Amis, the preeminent and deceased British author and poet. Amis has a fabulous way of slamming people's books and at the same time maintaining a scholarly sense that has you reaching for your dictionary at every paragraph.

THE AENEID-by Virgil. You've probably already read this, but I consider it historical fiction with a touch of poetry, depending upon which translation you get. I recommend Robert Fitzgerald's.

CREATION-by Gore Vidal. Good heavens, get yourself to a bookstore and read this immediately. This is REAL historical fiction, and it is amazing. You will learn about Darius, Xerxes, Artaxerxes, the Greeks in the early Golden Age, Buddha, Confucious and many other exciting figures of Hellenism.

THE ARTIST AS CRITIC-the Critical Writings of Oscar Wilde. Amazing, just amazing what this man can do with English. Highly recommend Wilde's prose work which I find less tedious and more didactic than his fiction.

Thanks for those recommendations Louise! I read the Aeneid for school a few years ago. I've always wanted to read Gore Vidal, I've read some of his stuff in the New Yorker but never his novels. The Martin Amis book sounds intuiging too, as does the Wilde. I've read his Picture of Dorian Grey and a biography of him, fascinating life! Thanks again! Mona
