What to buy a 9 year old boy?

We're buying some items for a local family through a United Way program, and I need to find one or two gifts for a nine year old boy. When I asked what he might like, I was told that his mom said he was a laid back kid and would just be happy with anything. I don't know any 9 year old boys so I have no idea what to get him. Can anyone help me out with some gift suggestions? I was also thinking about maybe getting him a book in addition to a toy and could use some book suggestions too. TIA!

My almost nine year old boy loves anything he can build with like Lego or Magz, he also likes board games. His favorite books are the Harry Potter series but also likes Unfortunate Events series. The Spiderwick Chronicles are also good and an easier read than the others.

I second the gameboy or video now even.

But the legos sound good too.
