What to get a 3yo Boy for B-day???

I am kind of cluesless as he gets small things year round. I am making him shorts & pants for the spring & summer but come on' you know he is going to wants some toys, right?

He is a big (understatement) Thomas fan but he does NOT need any more Thomas.

So what do you get??

* play doh and the toys that 'grow hair' my guys are facinated with them

* coloring books and washable crayons (I just spent this morning mopping crayon off the floor.. the washable comes off SOO much easier)

* DVDs of Thomas episodes that he really likes... I hate rewinding now that we have DVDs the kids are too impatient to wait for a tape to rewind.

I'm being used as a jungle gym so I'm going to post this before it gets deleted.

My 2yo will be 3 in 9 days!!!!

Well, don't know if you like/hate Wal-mart type toys, but

Playskool company makes large transformers for little hands. I think they are called Go-Bots. My soon to be 3 yo is facinated with them and they make a good car toy, b/c it keeps his attention without lots of pieces floating around the backseat!

Rescue Heros are a favorite

I second the play-doh and I found some that comes with battery powered tools that Jake loves, loves, loves

Any cool/educational video under 30 minutes (OK, maybe that is for me )

Those markers that only color on certain paper or coloring books - crayola makes them

We did solid wood blocks from an educational/teaching store called Kaplans (think there is a website) but not sure if its just a local company and I know you would pay $$$ to ship.

Finger paints and lots of butcher paper to paint on

Zoo membership (ours in NC is 50.00/family for a year and we live close enough to go on a whim and it pays for itself after 1 visit.)
Its so cool and my kids LOVE it.

A trip on a train (amtrack is cheap) and we did this for my 4 yo and it was a blast. We took a two hour trip to a city with a museum within walking distance of the train station and spendt one night with a friend in the same city.

My mom did an "outside gift basket" which was a huge sand bucket filled with outdoor toys and then bought several bags of samd to refill his sandbox. He will love it, too.

Swing Set!

Power Wheels!

Playstand, silks and clips

Cool Baby/swimming Pool

Slip N Slide ($10 at sports authority) or other cool yard water toy

Race Cars and a little track

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=toys&n=497366

Wooden Panatonic instruments from magic Cabin

TBall Set or Basket Ball hoop for outside

HTH

edited to say that I think the Zoo membership would be GREAT! You can get national memberships that will get you into several zoos too.

Caleb's favorite toy for Christmas was the Plan City Parking Garage. Its about $50 no matter where you get it from. They also have an airport, and other things.

We love wooden animals and wooden abc magnets here too.

Arts and Crafts stuff is always a big deal too.

How about a tricycle?

We personally love Playmobil toys around here. They can be a little pricey but they last forever! My kids love them. Even my 20 month likes to play with them (with supervision, of course )

spencer will be 3 in june, we are getting him a fisher price grow to pro scooter. He does well on his big brothers so we're gonna get him that, and some elbow and knee pads to go with it.

A gardening kit for kids, he loves to dig etc and watch stuff grow so we're getting him a little kit so he can help daddy water, and plant seeds.

bubbles, sidewalk chalk, any craft stuff are good ideas, maybe for Caleb if he likes Thomas perhaps a felt board or some books for him in Thomas themes?

Does he like Jay Jay the Jet plane? Those come in wooden pieces now just like Thomas stuff. Spencer is into that too.

I know you said he doesn't need any more Thomas or train things, but I'm going to suggest some anyway! (My 3 yo DS is also a Thomas and train fanatic!!) How about a train blanket? A shirt with a train applicated to it? Train pillowcase? Train shorts? Train whistle? Engineer cap? Train apron for helping in the kitchen? A special tote bag for taking his trains places?
Do you see a theme here?

Bandaids!

My standard gift for 3rd birthdays is to give the children...their very own box of bandaids!
And they always, always absolutely love it. It's a developmental stage or something that at that age little people seem to think that without a bandaid to hold them together all their innards will leak out through every teeny little owie.

My son is absolutely in love with Hess Trucks. You can find them on ebay. They are totally cool! Perfect for this age. My son loves the airplane and the helicopter. Most of them light up and are nice and big, easy to move around and play with.
