Question How To get a big pill down a kitty's throat:)

Our 10 year old male kittly is having some stress issues. We've ruled out anything medical. Our vet prescribed St John's Wort pills for kitties. They have been working great for him. We've just been popping them down his throat. But, dh had a rought time one day, and borke the capsule...and that stuff stinks. Now kitty won't come near us...and he figured out how to put his tounge to the roof of his mouth.

Any tricks?

Can't sprinkle it on food. Way to stinky. Could we roll it up in cheese or something yummy?

I really want to get the pills down him. but don't want to torture him.

TIA!

I will never give a cat a pill without one of these pill poppers/pill guns. I have been bitten too many times. LOL. They are excellent to use!

I'd also coat the pill with veg oil or butter to help it slide down easier...some people prefer fish oil/salmon oil to help the cat semi-enjoy the pilling. It also helps it slide down the throat easier and helps the pill slip out of the popper/gun easier. Coat the pill then place in gun/popper. Scruff your cat (it does not hurt them) and use the popper end to open his mouth on the side/ Slip the popper in, and yes, you will think you will gag him...you won't. Place the popper at the back of his mouth, back of tongue area...and "shoot" (press the plunger). The pill "pops" down the throat. (o:

Vets also often recommend following up with 1-3 ml/cc of water, from a syringe, to wash the pill down. Recent studies show that pill often rest and get stuck for a while in cats throats and cause irritation, gagging and even sores or vomiting. Water after prevents this. (o:

Once you try it and see how easy it is, you will never not use a piller again! They rock. LOL.
