My eldest dd is 9 and is very reponsible- she took care of a stray from a litter of kittens from the GS office last year, but it ended up having feline leukemia~ and is now no longer with us

. I'd like to get her another, but I am very worried about getting one from the pound or from someone's house (a close friend just had their new kitten die from parvo)~ would I be better off just getting one from a pet store? I don't want another kitten to die from something it caught before we got it. I really just want a mutt cat.

Any ideas?

your local humane society should have healthy cats ~ be sure to get shots & spayed/neuter asap.

absolutely the HS.. They make sure they are healthy before letting them be adopted, and usually have shots, first Vet visit and spay/neuter wrapped up into the adoption fee. (here it is about $100)

Humane Society's and Rescue Groups are a GREAT place to get cats. They usually check the cat for anything deadly and give them their vaccines and if they are older they usually have them spayed or neutered already! The adoption fee at our local Humane Society is $75 and they all come with vaccines (first set only if they are kittens), fixed and health checked. Much less then you would pay for all the office visits and spaying or neutering yourself (usually over $200 for first shots and spaying and office visits and checkups!)

And consider getting a cat that is a little older.. maybe 1-2 years because then you can already tell their personality and they have all their shots (some states you have to get the rabies yourself) and are a bit more mellow then a kitten who might scratch the younger kids just trying to play.

We got a kitten from the HS about 6 months ago. A little Siamese boy. We really wanted his little sister, but they have to be over a pound to go home with "regular" people. An adoption cat person took her 2 minutes after we were told we could not.

Anyway, they nuetered, dewormed, vaccinated and defleed the poor little guy all in one day. He was healthy when we chose him but incredibly sick within 2 days of bringing him home. There is a respitory illness that is running rampent in HS's right now. He was gravely ill for 3 weeks and then got much better. He is seriously the best cat I have ever owned! Such a cuddle bunny. Unfortuntely, he has a cronic(sp) sinus issue due to that illness. We have nicknamed him "Snuffles" because of it. He is still worth it, though. I would reccomend a Siamese. I have had all types and they are truly the best of the bunch. A boy, also. Seem sweeter than girls.

My mil just adopted a kitten from a no-kill animal shelter. Their adoption fee is $60 and that's with its shot and spaying. Very loveable cat. She meows like crazy when she wants treats lol She is very cute and cuddly. She loves to lay on you or next to you on the bed.

(thats from my 3 yr old niece lol) but what i really was editing for is our HS is VERY filthy and the animals are not taken very good care of and look sick and they sit in poops cuz their kennels are not cleaned. I would never get one from the one near me.

Playing catch up here.....since starting back to work, I am not here as much as I want to be!

I did not read the other responses so I may be repeating.

I'd NOT give my business to any pet store. (due to puppy mills)

If you have a no-kill animal shelter, that is where I'd look first.

Next would be your regular animal shelter.

Then you can always look into breeders if there is a breed that you really like.

We have four cats (so far!!).

First was a stray wild cat who claimed us as his family. (I was not a cat person until he came along)

Second cat is a registered seal point siamese.

Third is a cat that we got (at 9 weeks of age) last Thanksgiving from a area no-kill animal shelter.

Fourth is a lynx point siamese who is a half-sibling to our other siamese. (from the same breeder....she has EXCELLENT cats)

We have had great cats each time. Each was a kitten around 9 weeks of age with the exception of our first cat.....we think he was about five months old when he "adopted" us as his family.
