I am having the worst time with my DD school. This is the second time she has come home with lice. Last time was in October and it stayed for a month. I sent her back and forth to school when it was gone then she would get reinfested again. The school act like it is no big deal. They only have a nurse there once a week if that and if no parent tells the school there child has it they don't check. They don't even check the kids who do have it when they come back to school.
I don't think it is fair to my child and my pocket book that I should have to keep up with this. Last time they had a fit for I would not send her back unless the school got the clear. We got letters sent home about two weeks ago saying it was going around again. I have done the horriable shampoo, the mayo, the washing over and over again. I am just so tired of it all. The torcher for my dd to sit there for hours while I pull eggs out by hand is enought for me to scream.
I told them today she will not go back tell the nurse comes and checks everyones hair which won't be tell Monday. So she will miss her spelling test on Friday. I am going to call and talk to her teacher and see if I can give it to her and just send it to school Monday. My thing is this. If she gets it again should I just keep dealing with it or pull her out of that class or out of the school.
I live in a town where the majority of people come from a place where it is not clean and they bring back tons of crap ( meaning my kids are allways sick and this lice thing). My kids doctor said once we move from here my kids will get better and not be so sick all the time. I don't like this school that much but she only has 3 more months to go and then we are done.
So this being said should I move her to another classroom or just keep letting her get lice. I know you can get lice all the time but it seams it never goes away here at this school. My back hurts from egg picking and I just want it to end.
If the school isn't doing anything to prevent transmission of the lice your daughter will just keep getting re-infected. I doubt changing to another classroom , in the same school, will fix the problem. Having been a school nurse and worked with lots and lots of lice cases i know that it takes very little to catch them and tons of work to be rid of them. i am so sorry for you and your family. Sarah
Back when my oldest was 3 we had a really bad case of lice. Bad because we couldn't get rid of it. We all slept in the same bed so ds and I both had it. For some reason my dh didn't. We figured out that he was the only one who used Selson Blue medicated shampoo. After 2 treatments for both of us with RID we still had the lice. I have long hair and it was such a pain. Imagine having your dh and mil picking/combing nits our of your hair. Not a great experience for me.
So, I started washing our hair with the Selson Blue medicated shampoo. I did ds's hair every two days and left the shampoo in for 10 min. I did mine everyday. Sure enough, in two weeks they were gone. I didn't get the nits everytime we washed, just about twice a week. My theory is that dh didn't get them because he always had that medicated shampoo on his head.
I don't think it is as safe as the mayo but it is safer than that RID stuff. Yuck. That is why I started using the Selson Blue, I didn't want the harsh chemicals of the RID on ds's head.
Maybe you could just wash her hair with the Selson Blue until the end of the school year. Also, if you braid her hair it can cut down on the spread of them. They really like loose hair. Tell her not to share any piece of clothing with anyone!

We struggled with it for about 8 mos...we tried everything, remember I shaved mine & dd's heads? Don't do that, LOL...
But anyway, what finally got it was the homeopathic RID. The school nurse got some and we were her first testers. It works great, no smell, not nearly as greasy as mayo or olive oil (the kids got really sick of the mayo, the smell was so gross). I used it a couple times a week on Diana (Typhoid Mary, lol) and that did the trick. I actually stopped picking through her hair, I agree it's pure torture for the kids and mom. Keeping up w/ the homeo treatment & washing her hair everyday and it was done. We have 2 very good nurses at the school and they were checking my 6 & 8 yo twice a week and every class in the school a couple times a month to prevent another outbreak.
I hope we never have to go there again but I know what I'll treat with if it happens.
I think I am going to talk to dh and see what he thinks also. I know he is just going to say ooh well get over. I am off to Wal-mart and will do the Sb shampoo like Lmata said. I just don't get how they could not care that the kids keep getting lice. The lady at the front desk even went as far as last time to tell me I would be reported if my child was absent anymore then 3 days for this and then I would be sent to the board. I told her I didn't care and that my child being bug free is more important.
Thanks mama's! Wish us luck and hope they are gone.
it went around ds' class earlier this year also. some people jsut seem to host lice more then others. ( 2 sisters- 1 in each of my sons' classes get it every year. and their family is pretty much like ours- but my boys have not gotten).
several of us crunchy moms did an aromotherapy concoction to ward of the critters. non of us got it!
2 oz olive oil
2-3 drops tea tree oil, lavendar oil, lemon oil, and clary sage.
mix it up and slather all over you kids head- grease 'em up!! and put a bit on their neck. this might be more difficult for girls with long hair. all of our kids wore hats to school all day. it was cold anyway.
lice don't like the smell and they can't live in oil (i've heard)
That sounds like it would smell better then the mayo I had on her, lol. She smelt like a bologa sandwitch for a week, lol. My dd has shoulder length hair and is very very thick. I guess I will braid it also before she goes to school.
It isn't going to be fun with her home for two days, yikes let the screaming begin.
Poor Samie! I'm sorry Angie...that's a lot of work I was going to suggest a short haircut...or homeschooling. If she only has 3 mos. left...it's not much. That's terrible about the school.
Luna,
your oil sounds like it would smell great! I'll remember that if we ever get them again. Thankfully we homeschool so the chances of us getting it are much smaller.
I know several moms that mix tea tree oil into a bottle of regular shampoo and start using it on their kids the month before school starts as a preventative.
I've also heard that coconut scented shampoo deters lice......and I also read that tea tree oil is a good deterrant when mixed with regular shampoo.
GL getting rid of the lice. And do what you feel is best for your child, to heck with what the school says. Maybe having her wear a hat to school would help??? Could she (would she?) wear it all day??

Lice went around the barracks. Everyone had them to varying degrees. The military answer was to make all of us go to the pool everyday for about a week and also to wash all of our linens with bleach. It worked.
So far, there hasn't been any lice at Al's school. But, that idea of adding tea tree oil to the shampoo is appealing. I might just do that. Thanks for the tip!
We had success with tea tree oil, when nothing else would work. What I did was to put about 1/2 cup of water in a small spray bottle, and add about 1/2 teaspoon of tea tree oil. Then shake vigorously (oil and water don't mix) Then start spraying the hair, especially at the scalp. Then when it's thoroughly saturated, massage it in, then leave for about 1/2 hour. We wrapped my dd's head in plastic wrap and secured it in place. Then we shampooed as usuall, with tea tree oil added to the shampoo. We then combed her hair out, and continued each day to just use the shampoo, combing with a lice comb every few days, just to make sure the buggies were all gone, and no nits remained. We did this treatment once, and then never returned.
Also, my dd seemed to be a natural host, as she would pick them up every few months or so during the school year. This is the only treatment that kept them away, and she never had them again.
We also used tea tree oil this past fall, when we had a nice flea problem in my house. The cats became outside kitties, but we ended up with fleas, and my boys were getting eaten quite badly. I made a mixture of castor oil/tea tree/euculyptus oil, and we rubbed that onto their legs at bedtime, and each day, and no more flea bites. Worked great!
Well the good news is the shcool called and the nurse came in today and check her classroom. The found one other girl who had it and sent her home and the rest where clear So I am going to send her back tom but will do the tea tree oil shamppo and the Selseam blue and the other one, lol. I love tea tree oil and have a bottle here so at least she will smell good.
I tried the home school thing for a month and it wasn't for us. My dd was such a pain and refused to do anything but wine and it took me all day to get her to do anything. I am just glad she only has 3 months left. I still wish I could move her to another school but dh says no since there is only 3 months left.
Hopefull this will end and she won't get anymore. Her long thick hair is a pity to come and she looks like a boy if I cut it short. I am just thankfull I never get it and Jessica don't for she has curls.
Thanks mama's I knew I could get some help with it all. I washed everything and put her pillows in the dryer and I am off to get all the goodies for all your guys remedies.
