How do you turn around a bad day?

It seems like lately we've had a lot of rough days with the kids. Either they have been out of sorts or I have been grumpy or both. Everyone's getting over a cold so I hope things will get better when we're over it. In the meantime, I'd love to hear what you do when you know the day is going badly and destined to only get worse.

depends on what time it is. if it is 430 and dh is coming home at 5, then I stick it out and leave the house for some exercise ALONE while he handles things.

if it is early in the day I usually try to find some activity that is totally not on the schedule, but that we all find fun (library visit often) and try to get a better attitude. OR I load the stroller and backpack and head out with the dog for a walk. exercise helps mom, it helps baby, it helps kids mom is babysitting.....

But seriously, I do think getting out of the house helps a lot. I'm a bit paranoid about taking the kids out when their noses are running though, even if I don't think it's anything more than a runny nose. Normally, on Fridays, I go to the YMCA to work out and that helps improve my day, but I didn't go today because of the aforementioned runny noses. So instead, I tried running some errands to get us out of the house but that ended up being an hour of Donny yelling and Madeline crying "he's kicking my seat again!"

Laugh. I know it sounds stupid but if I can laugh and get the kids laughing just be silly and goofy for while. We all feel better and sometimes he horrible day is prevented.

I bake cookies. Seems to make everyone happy and settles a rough day. I always worry about the calories later...... Momentary sanity is too important.

Oooh cookies - that's a good idea. Oh, and the laugh suggestion reminded me of something else we do occassionally. We have this Elmo Hot Hot Hot Dance Songs CD that the kids love. Sometimes when I think we are all nearing our boiling point, I'll put that in and we all dance. I figure we get bonus points for burning calories too (probably from all the chocolate).

~We go outside! Sledding in the winter, hiking and swimming in the summer...

~We go to the library, or out to visit friends.

~We have friends over for lunch.

~We break out a new art project.

~We dress up and have a picnic on the living room floor.

~We drum and sing and make music and dance.

~We pull all the cushions off of both the couches and set up a place to climb and practice flips and somersaults.

~We call a Grandma or Grandpa.

If the weather is decent, we go for a walk. If it is really bad outside, we go to goodwill. The kids love goodwill.
