I had an interesting conversation with a wise, elderly woman
She was feeling dizzy at church, due to the heat, so she came into the nursery, to sit and rest. She gazed at all the plastic toys, in the room and smiled, a sad smile.
She told me, they do not make toys like the old days. Nothing is made to last or to foster a child's imagination. She went on to tell me of the toys she had as a child. She grew up in Germany. She had a wood kitchen set, and also a wood scale. Her mother would give her beans and rice, to measure on the scale and play house.
She would gather items from outside to pretend play...Oh how I loved that kitchen set, she said. It was well made and sturdy and lasted many years.
I also had a doll, which had a fabric, wool stuffed body and porcelain head/arms & legs. Every Christmas, I would get an outfit, for my doll. I had her for many, many years, until I sold her to buy food, for my ds, during the war. This was said with a sigh and what looked like a heavy heart <to me>
I agreed with her and thanked her for sharing her story with me. I see her every sunday, at church, but other then a hi, how are you? I have never spoken with her...I am thankful that the Lord had sent her into the nursery today.

You always have such wonderful insights. I'm not sure if I ever respond to your posts, but I generally try to read yours in particular. Another post here asks why we come to Amity's. Posts like these are why I come here. Thank you for always posting such lovely posts.

What a lovely story! Thanks so much for sharing it. I know I often need a reminder that those who are older and wiser have great things to share with us, if we'll only take the time to listen. Ther are so many older women in my church that I look up to and love to talk with!

They are both in their 80's. I realize our years together are limited and I really cling to MIL's stories. Today she was telling me about how my 12 year old son reminds her so much of her father. The way his gray/blue eyes brighten and almost seem to dance when he is happy. The way he is slow to answer and quiet when he does answer. The way he is gentle, but very much a "man". Gosh, I am even more inlove with my boy now. I loved seeing him through her eyes and I'm so thankful that he brings her such joy and a bit of her own father back into her life.

Thank you for your kind words I am glad to hear that I can make a difference, in a positive and supportive way.
Thank you for reminding me of another reason to treasure the elderly. There is a nursing home just down the street from our new house. I think I am going to take the boys down today for a visit.
