I know, odd question. But, tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of my father's death and I just checked the SS index and his birthdate was wrong which I know will cause confusion for future geneology works. Does anyone know how to correct this or who to call?

I just asked my mom (she's majorly into geneology) and she said that she thinks that ancestry.com has a page of FAQs where they address this. She said that she believes you need to write to the Social Security office and deal directly with them.

I'm an occasional lurker but just saw this post.

You need to take some sort of proof (death cert, notarized doctors records w/ date of death noted, in some cases some will take records from the cemetery or funeral home) to your local social security admin office.

In a lot of instances they will already have the correct date but the SSDI will have (and continue to have) the incorrect information, as it's compiled by a 3rd party and different places online all have different updates. I know the SSDI on Rootsweb allows you to post a sticky note on a particular person so anyone who does look up that record can note the correct information.

My mom called me back with more info. Make sure that your dad was old enough to get social security benefits - or disabled - otherwise he won't show up on the index. Also you should crossreference his ssn and make sure the person listed is actually your dad. Apparently, it's pretty common to have the same name and be someone else.

Thanks everyone. My father was only 42 so not old enough for Ss anyway but he is definitely listed on the SSDI. They have his birthday as the 14th and it's supposed to be the 4rth. I talked to my Gram about it as she is the one who does all of our geneological "stuff" and she is going to be taking care of it. Thanks again!
