step parenting rights

I'm step parent or maybe no longer a step parent since I adopted my stbx husband's son. We've decided to separate and now I'm wondering what are my rights as the adopted step mother. I've learned to love his son. And I don't want him to loose me. Is there a chance I can have full his full custody? He's only 8 yrs old. I've read that I have some rights to the child because I have adopted him. Is this true? I would surely get some legal advice but would want to get some advice.

If you adopted him, it's not the same as a step parent and step parents rights. I would imagine it would play out like any custody case, but the chances of you getting full custody may be less. I really have no idea, though.
