oye ve - already... comments

So I was getting an address from Shawn's parents - a cousin that he wanted to use as a referral. I assumed Shawn had told his parents our plans. Nope.

Me: Yeah, our application is being mailed on Monday. We decided on Ethiopia for the adoption.
Mom: Oh. Well... that's.... interesting.
Me: We really feel like that is the right place for us to adopt from. We're really excited to finally be making some moves forward.
Mom: Well, those people do have a lot of kids. What those people need is birth control.

Me: (picking jaw up off the floor)

DH gets to talk to them from now on. I don't care if he is half way around the world. sigh. I grant them a LOT of grace - they are a much different generation (they are almost as old as my grandparents - much older than my parents). They have limited experience with people any different from themselves.

Those people need birth control? Is that all she could think of to say? Really? I mean... it's ETHIOPIA. We've all seen pictures of kids from Ethiopia on the tv, haven't we? Their poor little malnourished bellies? The dusty roads? The severe poverty? And all she can say is they need birth control?

I'm sorry your ILs are so close minded.

We are rooting for you all and can't wait to "meet" your new addition, even if it is a wee while off LOL.

So I told my Mom today that we sent in the application and that we had decided on Ethiopia. (I think I had told her before... I swear I did) I told her to be ready for another grandbaby hopefully next winter. She was happy for us and said, "well, as long as you raise them, I don't care how many kids you have" lol

She has custody of one of my sisters' two children.

I told her, "well, I haven't asked for much from you thus far" She just laughed.

I am so glad I have MY family and not dh's.

Oh.. .and my sister who is staying here with me is having a baby next month. She is excited because there WILL be a cousin around the same age as her kids.

We got similar, well actually much worse, comments from family.

One family member "disowned" us. Oh well.

MIL and FIL were not at all happy about it but they came around before she was born and they ADORE her. You would think it was their idea.
