adopting special needs

Hi. Does anyone have any information about adopting a baby with down's syndrome? I have had this in my heart since I was a teenager & I am just starting to inquire about the idea. I always thought I'd do this after I had two of my own children...Now I have three of my own & I just keep revisiting this idea.

Thanks for any input!

I don't have any specific advice, I know there is an amity mama who has adopted two children with Down'as though....can't remember her username but she's posted recently on the arket if you canfind her.
Also do an internet search for Special Needs Adoption, or Down's Syndrome adoption.
Good luck - we are almost done with our home study for our adoption, we will be taking in a special needs baby/toddler too.

We have an approved homestudy and are licensed to adopt in our county. We are waiting quite impatiently. We would like to adopt special needs, ages 2-9, and are waiting. I am getting very irate and might go out of state. We are in AZ and are *trying* to adopt through the state.

If you go the state route, you should become a licensed foster parent as well; as little ones are placed in foster-adopt homes whenever possible- that is your BEST chance for getting a little one.

I'm so sorry if this post sounds bitter, but I am. We've been fostering since May; and there are SO many special needs kids that need homes but are lingering in the system due to inept judges and social workers. If I had the money, I would do a private adoption, out of the country to avoid all of this heartache and hassle.

I agree, get your foster certification first. check with your local non profit adoption support groups. they often feature special needs children who need to be adopted (and are already freed for adoption).

I don't understand why the state makes it so freaking difficult to adopt. there was a little blip on the news about how our state id 153 adoptions last year, and there are still 150 kids ready to be adopted. Have we gotten one call??? nope.... even though our file says we are open to adoption, any age, race, or need.

Seems like you and I are in the same boat. Infuriating, isn't it? We will also take any race, and a broad age range (2-9)....etc; but no calls. I'm giving my state a few more months before I start sending our homestudy to other states with waiting children.
