All tapping is productive. All of it. It is especially helpful if you are having strong emotions or feelings in your body at the moment to tap on them, but sometimes you just can't
You can do something that Rehana taught me called continuous tapping. I love it! Bear with me while I try to explain it.
This is using the finger points all on the same hand.
~First you take your index(or middle finger)finger and tap it on the thumb point.
~Then use your thumb to tap on your index finger point.
~thumb tap on middle finger point.
~thumb tapping on little finger point.
You can do this one handed or both hands at the same time. You can do it one handed while driving...under the desk at work, behind your back... I found myself doing it while I was pushing my daughter on a swing. I could get 7 taps on one finger point in between pushes
This is an easy way to keep tapping. It is really good for people who are really anxious or have lots of negative self talk...as it is interrupting that negative stuff...you can do deeper work on issues when you have more time. Tapping in little spurts here and there and continuous taping help prevent your 'bucket' from overflowing...you know like in the allergy paradigm. So even though it seems like if you can't get to the core issue, you are still tapping to prevent a build up of negative stuff.

I've been wondering about this too. I.e., if I am feeling anxiety (with our without cause) setting in, I just started the tapping sequence -- but without the set-up phrase. Should I be doing a set-up phase too? Or is it productive to just start tapping. If I am driving, I just start with the eyebrow and move on.
On a related note, what about tapping on children without a set-up phrase when they are getting agitated?

You don't need a set up phrase, you can just tap...any of the points. IF your kids are agitated, then surrogate tapping is usually best, unless they love tapping. You don't need a set up..but I still spend some time tapping the karate chop as that really helps with psychological reversal.
Don't worry about the words so much...there is not right or wrong. It is productive just to tap. I promise.

Try "I feel so HELPLESS"...(or putting in whatever other word you are feeling when you are asking for help)
and when you are tapping on that, then see what else comes up for you.

So...if your child is agitated and you are feeling anxious..you can simply tap on the fact that"I feel so anxious, so scared, so helpless." or just tap without words, because all the chemicals are coursing through your body..your neurotransmitters are flowing in the way that is making you feel anxious. The tapping is the pattern interrupt.
Now this is just 'mechanical tapping' which has incredible value, but you do need to go deeper to get rid of the core issues that cause the negative responses such as anxiety. With practice and time the words will come forward for you. IN the meantime tap no matter what

I just wanted to make it clear that the 'mechanical' tapping is really useful as well(even though you might not be getting to the deep stuff), and should NOT be discounted. It is REALLY helpful.
