yep i emailed her last night asking for explanation for why she wanted $20.00 for shipping cuz i found it very hard to believe it would cost that much
and after my own research ( taking my slip cover off thats one of the heavier weights and weighing it ... and checking from her zip to mine and seeing JUST how much it really would cost ) im ready and aimed with ammo LOL
i havent heard from her yet so im just sitting here wondering how shes going to defend her handling fee of nearly $13.00!
My DH just sold a set of "headers" for a car motor. The package was 32.5 pounds and large. It only cost $12.18 to ship. (It was shipped using Fedex and within the same state as I am.)
The bottom line is.....NEVER bid on anything without asking how much they are charging for S&H. I hate that she is over charging you for shipping.
maybe i'm the only one who thinks it's the *buyers* responsibility to inquire on unlisted shipping charges before bidding and entering into a binding contract...i dunno
imo, if you don't pay the shipping she asks, you're opening yourself up to negative feedback. sure, it's crazy to charge $13 to HANDLE a package in preparation for shipping, but ebay clearly states that not all shipping and handling fees are to be openly listed in the contents of the auctions, so it's up to the buyer to either KNOW AHEAD OF BIDDING, or TAKE A CHANCE.
that $13 difference might end up costing you a lot more in the long run, especially if you ever plan on selling or buying on ebay again.
im not posting to get backlashed ... and i fully understand feedback ect.... ive worked very hard to retain my 100% feedback of 248 shown number but 320 all positive!!
and i usually always ask if not listed or just dont bid ...but come on .. do you expect that someones going to ask you to pay $20.00 for a couch slipcover to send it to you?? heck if i did ... i thought at most $10.00 cuz surefit themselves only charges $8.00 for the sofa size, $7.00 for loveseat ....
I agree, I never bid on anything without at least an estimate on the shipping. But you did, so other than complaining, there's not much you can do, except bite the bullet and pay up. Find out who the shipper is, the weight and the zip code, figure out how much it is, and then tell everyone if you've been overcharged in your feedback(you may want to give positive though).
And if I see someone selling something for $.99 and shipping $19.95, then I report them to ebay. Every time. I hate that crap.
Buyer beware, remember to read the fine print and lack thereof.

$20 is outrageous but I have to agree with Kas that it is the buyers responsiblity to ask.
I think that Ebay does have something in their R+R about unreasonable charges and I am pretty sure that qualifies as an Unreasonable charge. You could report it to Ebay and let them know and maybe the seller will either come down on it or let you out of the auction all together.
Would you mind posting a link to the auction? Are all her other auctions that high shipping as well?

i guess if im coming across as complaining im not meaning to ... and i know im responsible for paying ect but i found it extremely crazy for her to be asking such a deal and one reason for starting this post was to see if others have had same experiences ect .. and ive NEVER been hit with a suprise like this before

and honestly i got a GREAT deal on the slipcover .. BUT was NOT expecting such a hit with shipping charges or rather 'handling charges' like this... it would be WAY different feeling if my high bid amount was what it ended at and that total with reasonable shipping was asked .... but im thinking since it ended so low shes trying to get more outta the auction ...
ive learned from selling ( and dont do it very often, maybe a few times a year ) cuz i never have luck on my auctions lol ...but if you want a certain amount at least PUT A RESERVE on it or start it a lil higher!!!
she didnt do either ... heres the auction and you will see yes i got a great deal on the winning amount ... but still think its outrageous for her asking s&h price .. id hate to think if it ended at my high bid if shed still be asking for the $20.00 ... i would be a lil more 'red' about it then

I don't think anyone is giving you backlash, I certainly am not trying to. You had asked what we thought of it and we are doing just that, giving you our thoughts. It's one of those situations where we might not know if you are new to ebay etc. and don't know or not. Just trying to be helpful not hurtful.
I have so learned my lesson to not assume that someone will be fair or knowledgable about shipping...when someone wanted $20 to ship a pair of pants or a coat (same person)...I ALWAYS ask first. Oh and I didn't bid on that person's auctions...I asked first and told her she was nuts and I turned her into eBay...and eBay basically said too bad, so sad. Oh and someone once actually charged me $10.00 to ship a HAT! I did NOT ask her before the auction ended...I asked her to send it first class for like $3.50-$4.00...and priority for $4.00 or so...knowing full well that was MORE than what it would cost. She got ticked at me...said it clearly stated $10.00 and that's that! I paid...argh...she left me positive, then when I griped about how much it actually cost to get to me (of course like $3.85 priority)...she then added a follow up nasty comment to her positive. I still did not leave her a negative...how could I? I KNEW how much she was going to charge me, but stupid me thought she was a newbie and just didn't understand how cheap it would be to ship...and THOUGHT she would be honest and not STEAL my money...oh and she used a priority box.
Anyway...I ask first...if it's too high in the listing, I will kindly ask for cheaper shipping before bidding (unless they state don't email asking for a lower shipping). It is so obvious these people are avoiding eBay fees, but I think eBay has gotten so big they just cannot deal with the constant complaints and issues surounding shipping gouging. Now they state a seller is entitled to "reasonable" S&H fees...and that is up in the air as to what "reasonable" is...no matter how many times I report someone for their S&H fees...eBay does nothing. Eh.
So understand the "sticker shock" you felt mama...it bites! And complain away...you are entitled and some do listen and understand (I only read your first post and last response...no one else's BTW)..k?
i know even with the $20.00 shes asking for the shipping and handling +my ending winning bid, i got a good deal .. but in the manner its being asked and dealt with ( the high handling ) its what bugs me the most ... i would NEVER ask such a thing of someone
i think this is probably the first time i havent tried contacting a seller about shipping charges and ive learned yes lol ....
i usually do the same as you and try to see if they would send a cheaper way so i can be able to bid more on the item and know they are getting more $ instead of the post office
id say 99% of the time they are willing to do that , sometimes they dont even get back to me before the auction ends and that bites
i need a small lamp for by our bed and there is one on ebay that of course now ended and she didnt respond back with actual shipping cuz in her 'ad' she listed that it starts at $6.00 and goes upward depending on weight and location ... so i wanted more defiente answers about it before i placed the bid .... i may still try contacting her since it would be a perfect lamp that i can mount on the wall and it swings out for mikes side of the bed... since my side will have a night light lol
but ne ways i do appreciate the comments and thoughts and glad im not alone on the matter

It's definitely padding in the shipping costs - let us know what happens. At this point you have no choice but to pay, of course - but I think I'd wait till she leaves you feedback, and then just email her and tell her you thought her shipping charges were unfair, and you won't be bidding on her auctions again.

Well.. I have enough positive feedbacks that I wouldn't worry about one negative. You got a great deal on the cover even with the outrageous shipping and handling charge but $20 ? come on. She is clearly screwing you. I understand about ebay fees, time, gas, packaging material which is why I start my auctions a little higher...to cover those extra expenses. I just sold keaton's paint ball gun on ebay and stated in my description that shipping would be $15 and that I would be adding $3 to that amount to cover cost of shipping materials. The gun cost $14 to ship and I used an entire roll of bubble wrap... so I made a buck off the shipping charge. Fair I think.
I do believe that it is the responsibility of the buyer to make sure of all charges before placing a bid... *BUT* I think it is reasonable to expect the seller to include in their auctions a fair quote for shipping and handling.
If I were going to sell something that would only cost $8 to ship but wanted to screw the buyer out of $12.. I certainly wouldn't list my shipping quote in the auction. I would do what the seller did in this case. She knew that she would have you over a barrel once you won the item. I don't like that position very well I'ld tell her that she was a taco shy of a combination plate if she expected me pay $12 over the actual cost of shipping I might offer to pay $10 for shipping and then would probably still leave her a negative feedback.

i finally got a response from them, and im paying for priority mail and the box it comes in ( ok priority boxes are free ) and a small handling fee. and their words, " its not an outrageous price for everything "
so i responded and i told them id like delivery confirmation on the package
and im off to pay ill have paypal behind me if it doesnt show i suppose lol
Well I would not give a positive rating to her for over-pricing on the shipping. A couple of dollars is one thing, but ripping you off is another.
I state in your feedback how much she over-charged you for shipping, and how she was trying to say you were paying for the free priority box the post office gives out.
sorry momma...I learned this long ago when I ordered a poster for my son @@....no shipping listed, I thought it would be relatively small considering it was PAPER, rofl..it was 12.00!!! the auction ended at like, 3 bucks...and I bid on 3 of them, and won...I had to practically BEG for combined shipping, and even then, it was 12.00 for the first one, and 4.00 for each of the others @@.
I felt ripppppped off, but, I had no leg to stand on :/
