I've seen both sides of sniping, as a buyer and as a seller. As a seller, I wish people would "bid early, bid often!" But I know that ain't gonna happen, so I set the opening bid at something I wouldn't mind getting for the item. One of my regular customers got sniped once by someone using software, by an amount of about $.26. She didn't know how the person could have won with such a small amount. I actually received an automatic email telling me this bidder had won using this software, sort of a sales pitch for it.
As a buyer, I will snipe an auction manually if it's something I really want and don't want to overpay for it. I don't do much buying, though, so I can't be bothered with sniper software. As long as we all know the rules, I don't see that it's unfair. It's just part of doing business on ebay.
