Can We Talk About Washing Diapers?

If this isn't the right forum, please redirect me, okay?

Anyhow, Garrett was potty-trained 6/02 and this new baby arrived 6/06.

SO....I had a four year break from washing dipes.

Give me the dirty: what type of soap/detergents, how many cycles/rinses, line dry or machine dry?

TIA!

I do a cold soak (no det.) then a long wash with a little Tide (less than 1/4 cup) and tea tree oil on hot with an extra rinse. After that rinse I switch it to cold and do another rinse. I throw everything in the dryer. for about 45 min.

That's basically what I do, front loader on the sanitize cycle with an extra rinse. I line dry or machine dry (when I'm being lazy or if it's raining). I use Tide and tea tree oil in the wash.

I haven't washed diapers since 2000 or 2001 (WOW Has it been that long?!). I'm due in December, and I've already got it planned out. I plan to do 2 cold rinses, no detergent. Cold wash with detergent (I use cheap generic detergent from Wal-Mart.), hot wash with detergent. Rinse until no bubbles. Dry in the dryer.

I'll save my covers for the end of the day then toss them in the washer with my BumGeniuses and do a cold wash with detergent, hang dry.

I can't wait!

Get some Bac Out. You can get it at Whole Foods, or perhaps online. It's the only thing that gets out the pee pee smell after awhile!!!!!

( I love to sun diapers too. Makes them sooo white...)

I just wash them like I wash clothes, really.

Dry pail, hot wash, extra rinse (because it's usually conventional detergent like Tide or Surf), and hot dry

I think the hot dry is good for prefolds and fbs - the PUL likes being heated up and it keeps it water resistant, and it's good to kill all the germies that may linger behind a hot water wash if you keep your heater turned down.

If it's something I can't "abuse" in the wash, I do that separately. But most of my stuff is standard PUL (or bummis, etc.) and prefolds.

Now see, I did this and it really messed up my dipes. I suddenly had holes and wear spots. I got the liquid and added some to the wash cycle. Granted, they were used dipes, but I never did figure that out.

Those of you that use Tide, do you use Tide Free? Are there any detergents to avoid?

I don't use free anything - I didn't know Tide made one, but the "free" or "free and clear" detergents are notorious for causing buildup (particularly an issue if you use anything with microfleece, fleece, pockets, etc.)

I am going to try regular Tide with tea tree oil.

I will never use anything but Charlies Soap or Allens Naturally on my dipes again. I used to use Tide, Sun, All free & clear etc and everytime she peed, her diapers would wreak right away.

So, when she goes #2 I rinse the diaper right away and dry pail it with the pee dipes. Every other day, I toss um in the wash.

COLD RINSE
HOT WASH with 2 tbsp of detergent with an EXTRA COLD RINSE
Machine Dry on medium heat

by the way we use pocket diapers!
