Anyone have experience using prefolds on a BF'ed newborn?

I was going to go with fitteds but they cost a lot and they take a long time to dry. I used chinese prefolds with Kaya and they were great since I didn't start till she was a year old.

But I am wondering about the BF poop that runs out of diapers and up the baby's back (even with disposables)!

Will a prefold folded in a wrap keep it all in??? Should I snappi or pin it first?

I don't want to have to change the baby's clothes, bedding etc even time he/she poops.

What to do what to do! I'm trying to get a game plan for a diapering system for the first 6 months or so.

I used (and will use) prefolds and prorap covers. I don't use pins or a snappi, just trifold the prefold, lay it in the cover, and put it on. It doesn't 100% keep all of the poop explosions but I have yet to find anything that does. It does work better than disposies which aren't as fitted in the back.

i too had only used pf's on an older child till this time...and i find myself reaching for them more often than the fitteds and aio's we have! the secret was to find a fold that really contains bf poo - here's a link that helped me! http://www.littleturtleknits.com/sidewallpf.htm

Yep!

Tri-folded prefold (or washcloth, in the VERY begining) in a prorap, Bumkins or BSWW worked well.

We used only prefolds and proraps on Lauren until she was 3+ months. There were only 3 times she had blowouts. Once was in a prefold (and trust me, nothing was holding that in ) and the other 2 times were when tried to put disposibles on her for travel. Every time we put her in a sposie she had a leak...otherwise I can count the leaks we had on one hand. They poo does get on the cover if you don't snappi/pin but we just had a stash of covers and washed every other day. This time I think we'll try snappi'ing the prefold but most of the time I'm guessing we'll just lay the prefold in the cover again. It was so easy and worked reallly well for us.

I also used prefolds with wool covers (strictly lay-in) and used the "jelly roll" - although I just called it a roll LOL and it worked great! Can't remember having a blowout except once, but whatever leaked was contained by our wool covers

I too only did cloth with my 2 other children when they were older. My third I set out to do cloth right from the start. What a wake-up call! I thought I was prepared and I was not! I bought infant UB prefolds, Hemp inserts and some NB covers ( 4 Bummi's & 1 Bumpy wool). Take my word for it- Buy lots of covers! The poop gets on 'em every time!

I pinned my prefolds and it helps keep the mess of the covers a good bit, though not always. I only had a blow out a couple of times. (I'm not counting the times I forgot to put a cover on!)

I used prefolds exclusivly with Gavin. I never had one leak onto his clothes. I found that as long as I used a good covers I never had a problem. I LOVE dappi pull ons. They didn't let anything past!

I find the same thing. Granted, ds is only 12 days old and hasn't had too many huge poopies yet, but no issues with leaks yet for us. We are still usually in preemie prefolds with a snappi (it is tricky to use a snappi on a preemie CPF, but we've managed). It may sound odd, but I just cannot get the "hang" of just laying a CPF in a cover & getting it all to work.

**Edited to add that we used prefolds on dd her whole diapering "career" and had virtually no leaks. poo or otherwise, once we found a fold that worked for us.

I used prefolds on both my kids as newborns. We always pinned, and man could I pin good, and we still got the occasional blow-out. Luckily it cleans up pretty easy Usually whatever poop exploded up the back was contained in the cover.

I used PFs with my first 3, but they do blow out sometimes. I really liked teh used fitteds I got for #4. Maybe you can get a deal on a batch, otherwise, PFs will definitely work fine, and you prolly won't get too many blowouts. My fave covers are felted wool wraps like the old Kangaroo Korner ones and wool Nikkys.
