decluttering for a move....advice?

How do you decide what is 'move worthy'? How early on do you get ruthless about getting rid of things? How do you pare down when you are a packrat saver at heart

We believe we'll be moving in late winter/early spring, so we have several months BUT our yard sale weather ends around Sept so I would like to have a big one then. We can save a few larger things until a month or so before the move and use craigslist to sell them (like our chair and sofa that we don't want to keep).

I've already been donating a lot too of course.

Any advice?

I kept in mind that movers charge by the pound. X item weighs about 10 pounds.. was it worth moving that or is it something I could replace if i chose to down the road for a comparable amount, etc.

If it hasn't been used in 6months to a year it goes. Clothes, if you don't feel good when you're wearing it, it goes. 2 sets of sheets per bed, no more. Knick knacks, if you don't want to dust them, sell them. 1-3 items per shelf depending on shelf size (knick knacks). Multiples of items such as suit cases, duffle bags, etc. get pared down and only keep what's necessary for your family size.

Are you planning the move to Hawaii????

Yes! Well, that's the plan right now. Now we won't be taking much of anything with us there since the plan is to just stay a year or so and we'll probably rent a furnished house. We'd put everything we want to keep in storage with the assumption we'd be back in Seattle in a year. DH doesn't think we'll ever come back to our current house - he thinks we'll either stay in HI or come back and move out of the city.

It is exciting, crazy, scary... lol
