closet cleaning help/support!!!

Help! I had it in my mind to attack my closet and be brutal about how often I wear something and if it even still fits - otherwise donate it and get it out of the house! But, then as I started I get all the same feelings I usually do that defeat me. It centers around the nicer clothes in the closet that I haven't had occasion to wear lately - some haven't been worn in years (from my single, skinnier days - LOL!). Now mind you, the problem is I've had 2 twin pregnancies in the last 6 years, so I don't fit in most of it.

So I go back and forth about will I ever be able to fit in it again? I do hope to lose the post-prego weight, but it'll take me at least a year. Should I just pitch what I have and buy something if an occasion comes up where I need something dressier? And buy new clothes as a reward if I ever do get down to the skinnier sizes again? I'm about 2 sizes too big for most of my stuff.

I also have a problem getting rid of the silk clothes I bought in Singapore a long time ago, just because they're special. But I can't fit in them right now.

So I haven't gotten very far....I would like to hear what you ladies do with clothes you don't fit in anymore? Do you hold on to them, hoping?

TIA!
D.

I used to~but no more. The rule that I use is if I have not worn it in a year, out it goes...yes, it is hard, but the more you do it, the easier it is~I promise

If you want to de-clutter you have to let go and heave ho~

Good luck! Let us know how you do.

I have some suits from when I was a FT working woman that I didn't want to just throw in a bag for the Salvatin Army, so I am having a garage sale. I'll give the clothes a fair chance to get sold to someone who actually wants them.

Here's a few other ideas for you:

Donate professional clothes to an organization like "Dress for Success." It helps poor women get job-interview clothes.

Turn your fancy silks into other things. You could probably make some beautiful pillow covers for your bedroom out of them. That way you can still remember the trip & the beautiful fabrics are still yours, but the clothes are no longer cluttering your closet.

And do not forget that donating clothes is a tax deduction. I donated almost $400 of old clothes last year. It does help your tax bottom line.
I am sure some other mamas will ahve good ideas for you.

Thanks for the ideas! DH says similar things to the 'heave-ho' thing - he says it's time to let go and move on. This, from someone who has exactly the same number of shirts as hangars in his closet. I can tell how many shirts are in the laundry by the number of empty hangars. Nothing extra in THAT closet!

Me, I still have shoes I wore to a wedding 15 years ago! I did finally get rid of the bridesmaid dress about 5 years ago!

So, I'm making slow progress. It gets me how I barely remember some of this stuff, but when I see it again, I just....can't.....let.....go....

Thanks for the idea about the silks!

Back to it...

Keep those silks mama.
How often do you go to singapore?
If not often, I would keep them as a special sovenier from there.

I have toseed things before like that and I regret it now.
