Michael's had garden stepping stone kits on sale the last time we were there, so I got one of the small "kid's kits" for Aidan and it turned out really well and was very easy to make.
Now, I'm wondering if the mixture that came with the kit was just concrete and if I could just get a bag at the hardware store and make more of these using the same mold for even less money.

Yes, it's just concrete. You can even buy colorant, so the stones are colored. And you can use old tiles, broken dishes, rocks...whatever you want, to decorate them.
One of our homeschool friends (the dad/husband) had a day where we all went over to their house and the kids made garden steps. He even made his own molds. I love them in my garden!

I did a bunch of handprint stepping stones for Christmas gifts when ds was 2. We found that QuikCrete mortar mix was the best thing to use-- the concrete mix had a ton of rocks, but the mortar mix was smooth. We like to use the glass rocks for decoration, and patio paint works well too, and weathers well. And for molds, you can use just about anything, we buy the cheapest plastic drip tray (for plants) in different sizes.
I'll have to make new ones next year, so that all the grandparents have Cailey's handprint too!

That is so cute. Was Aidan really pleased with it?
With regards to using plastic molds, does one treat the mold with anything so that the concrete, or quickcrete, will release?

"What I'm certain I don't want," she finally said aloud, "is to find myself someday in a new century, an old bitter woman looking back, wishing that right now I'd had more nerve."
I actually went to Target and bought one of those kits...I think it was plaster of paris in the mix. I am not sure they are going to hold up in the rain.
Next time I will try the plastic drip trays and morater mix. I would love to line my *eventual* garden with homemade stepping stones!
