Fimo has a "soft" product that is extremely easy to work with (almost like playdough).
Don't be intimidated. I just started and was scared to use it at first. I am still getting used to using my fat fingers to sculpt. It is quite therapeutic.
I have found it to be pretty non-breakable but I am making things in miniature.
There are some very experienced fimo/sculpey users that should answer your questions better than I but since I am a newbie too, I thought I would give you some encouragement.

I used Fimo a lot many years ago, but I cannot handle the fumes that come when you bake the stuff. I wouldn't bake Fimo with my kids in the house.
It is a fun medium, just very, very synthetic. I prefer to use real clay for my miniatures.

fimo is fun, I havent made too much with it yet, but I am thoroughly enjoying it Check out the websites, if you look at the potato/cauldron post I made a day or so ago, there is a link to some books on amazon that have some easy to make veggies.
watch out, crafting is addicting...sigh...

I love FIMO...but I am still pretty new too it. It's pretty sturdy once it's baked. Although if you make something thin and small it can break easily if not handled with care.
