I'v searched online and have had no luck trying to find how to attach the yarn to the cap or how to prepare the hair.anyone know?

I've always just done a single crochet to attach the hair, and then pulled the loop really long, and cut the loop to make the hair (yes, clear as mud, LOL!)I haven't done many dolls, but this seems to work as it anchors the hair in nicely, but it is very time consuming!

I think to get really detailed explination you probably have to buy directions to make a doll, I think most doll-making mamas view it as a "trade secret" yk?

I remember talking once with a friend who has made many Waldorf dolls. She said that if you are going to hook hair into the cap, you can double crochet it. It gets done faster than if you single crochet, and leaves bigger openings so it is easier to hook the hair in. If you are using a crocheted cap as the hair itself, it would probably be best to single crochet so it would be denser. Also, she said it is easier to shape if you start from the bottom edge and spiral inward toward the crown.

For boy hair you do what Theresa said:

You do a cap a spiral sc's. When you do each sc you stick the hook in the hole, loop the yarn over one of your fingers so that when you pull the yarn through the hole the loop tightens around your finger and stays on the back side of your work, then finish the sc.

The first few rounds you increase every sc

then cut back to increasing every 3 or 4

after about 5 or 6 rounds just sc in every stitch til it fits your head when slightly stretched.

When your done you can cut the loops (for that boy hair you're used to seeing) or leave the loops. It takes a while to get speedy with this method.

ALso for boy hair you can get a shorty, curlier look by using boucle yarn. You can do your cap with dc's with boucle. By far the easiest and fastest method.

For girl hair I do a cap with dc's and hook each strand in like you would do fringe or latch hooking. If there are bangs I sew them to the head before attaching the cap. Then hook hair around the edges, then in even rows til the head is filled in. It takes forever but IMO gives the fullest and most versatile girl hair. A lot of the directios for "multi style wigs" still leave a lot of empty spots

For easy girl hair you could crochet a cap with dc's with boucle yarn and just attach permanent pony tails or braids at the sides. Good for little kids who don't have the skill to mess with all that hair. LOL!
