What charities do you donate to?

It's a new year and I'm working on a financial plan kind of thing for the year. I'd rather make a conscious decision now about who we will donate to, rather than just whoever hits us up throughout the year.

So, who do you donate to?

DH used to donate to the Sierra Club until he heard some negative stuff about them. I know that he nows gives to the World Wildlife Fund. I donate to Animal Save. It is a local non profit that is trying to get enough funds to build a no-kill shelter for stray and unwanted animals.
We give mainly to environmental or humane causes.
I also donate time to Habitat for Humanity.

We donate every Christmas to Toys for Tots. Throughout the year a small portion of Dh's paycheck is automatically deducted and given to the humane society and one of the cancer ones...this is bad, but I forget which one!

I'd like to donate to this charity. http://www.childrenofthenight.org/home.html
I keep putting off figuring out a new way to budget that in...but I think it seems like a really worthwhile cause.

I keep it local. Well, not local local, but when I give to charity, I make it charities back home that I know well and know what they do. And that's what I'd recommend, that you go local. That way you can see the good a charity does in the community.

We donate to the Red Cross. We've bought bees and trees for Heifer International. We donate our girls outgrown clothes to the local Open Closet and donate food goods to the Open Pantry.

We also keep our eyes open in the local papers for familes who lose their homes in fires. We try to always make up a box of toys, clothes and necessities to give them.

I give quite a bit to my local LLL group AND LLL International. I always participate at least once during the holidays in Toys for Tots and I donate twice a year to Goodwill/Salvation Army. If this is considered "giving", I also buy membership to 2 childrens' museums and 1 science center...all of which need the $$
