I nursed dd til she was 16 months i was pregnant and my milk changed and she looked up at me one day looked like it went bad or something. so she tried for another week or so then just stopped. she is now 3

now i am nursing her brother 13 mo only at night . part of me loves it and wants to keep nursing but the other part, the part that wants to go on a weekend holiday w dh alone, wants the freedom.

here's my question. i've read that some children nurse only once a week. how does the milk stay? can i leave him for the weekend and come home and still nurse?

i love nusing and want to keep doing it but was need a little time off. can that be done? anyone?

Hi,
Since breastmilk production works on supply and demand it is possible to nurse only a few times a week and still produce milk. That said, it would probably work for you to go away for the weekend and pump or hand express a bit to keep your breasts from becoming engorged. More than likely you wouldn't have issues with resuming your regular nursing schedule.

My children started spending the night at my mom's around 18months, and were still nursing quite frequently. I don't pump while Ty's gone (22m) and when he comes back there are no complaints. Now, if they were still nursing for most of their nourishment, I would pump regularly, probably every 3-4 hours, but not overnight for a toddler, even one who night nurses.

My sil left her 18month old for the weekend and still had plenty of milk. I only dry up when pg so I know I could. If he still nurses more then once or twice a day I would plan on bringing a pump or hand expressng just because you might get full and uncomfortable. My kids at 13 months were still pretty attach to the breast so I would make sure I expressed/pumped at least once a day, I just wouldn't chance it, they would have been really upset if I did dry up lol

thank you for all the advice. poor little Bretty has been sick so we've uped the nursing sessions to 3-4 times whenever he pulls at my shirt. i have a manual hand pump that i will bring along for sure. i still don't have a day nailed down we we're going, just wishful thinking.
