How would I know if my body isn't producing enough milk?

My baby has been fussy off and on since birth. He was a preemie and we had a little more of a rough start nursing than the others, but I even went to a LC and she thought things were fine. Right after I saw her he started gaining and was gaining 1oz per day as of his last checkup. He is so fussy and now they are saying colic and reflux. I'm off dairy and he's on meds for reflux. Sometimes he's so fussy and like tonight it had been 2 hours since he nursed so I tried to feed him and he was fussy on both sides and honestly I felt empty. I made him a 4oz bottle of soy stuff and he's taken the whole thing down. I'm really wondering if lots of his fussiness is hunger. I feed him on demand, but there are many times when he'll fuss at the breast and again I just don't really feel full. I'd appreciate any advice b/c I'm so frustrated and feeling like I'm causing him to be fussy by basically not getting him fed

Gaining weight is a good sign.

So is peeing! How many wet diapers does he have a day? And how about his poops?

That's what I thought too, that his gaining was a great sign. He went from pooping ever diaper to sometimes days going by.My other 2 did that also so that didn't concern me. I'd say he has 6+ wet diapers a day. Tonight after he drank that formula he hasn't cried a bit since and it's been like 2hours now.

maybe your milk is letting down to fast for him. That made my DD very upset and she would almost refuse to eat on the side that did that. Now that things have evened out she is fine. Do you have a pump at home? Maybe you could pump a little before he nurses or pump and put it in a bottle for him, he is after all still getting it no matter wear it comes from. Good Luck

He seems fine when he latches on. I can hear him swallowing etc and he's fine. It just seems like there are many times where I'll think he's done, switch him, etc and then he'll be fussy. He'll be pulling away from the breast and acting like he's getting nothing. There will be no swallowing etc.

Is it possible for you to get to a local LLL meeting? My little sister lives near you..I can find out from her where the local ones are if you need. It's usually good to have someone watch whats going on and see if they can help. Also, if you do supplement, you could be having supply issues because the baby doesn't have to work so hard to build your supply.

How old is he now? Growth spurts can cause a great deal of fussiness and feeling empty as they work extra hard to build your supply themselves.

Start eating oatmeal daily and watch him for other food sensitivities besides dairy, too. Just one little thing could cause him to feel icky, yk? And drink your mother's milk tea!!

Hope that helps some
