Why is my milk drying up?

My son is three months old and I have been pumping for him and giving him 1-2 bottles of formula a day. The last few days my milk is greatly reduced. I went 5-6 hours a couple of times with out pumping, but have tried to pump every 1.5 - 2 hours today. Its taking me 30 minutes to get 1 oz. This morning I only had 2 oz when I should have 6. I am drinking 2 - 3 cups of coffee. But I am also drinking mothers milk tea, drinking lots of water and eating oatmeal. Any suggestions? I use an Ameda pump.

Pumping more often is great. Remember, however long it took for your milk supply to get INTO trouble, it will take about that long to get OUT OF trouble. You may need to do that for a few days before you see results. Sounds like you are doing the best things, just keep them up and maybe you will see a change in a few days.

Is he put to the breast at all? If so, try to increase that some when possible. (no pump is as efficient as baby)

Be sure to look at other things that could be causing trouble.........any new meds? avoid sage

Look at the bottom of this page for heb suggestions : http://www.bflrc.com/newman/overhead...0problems.html

another link for you.

I pumped exclusively for a month and again for a month while relactating. Here are some things that helped me:

pump at least 8/day (every 2 hours while awake), more if you can
Brewer's yeast (6 caplets 2x/day)
Fenugreek 3 capsules 3x/day)

Good luck! You CAN build your supply back up.

is the ameda pump a purely yours or is it a hospital grade?

are you taking any supplements other than the mothers milk tea? fenugreek capsules worked well for me.

how is your diet? do you use many spices (especially sage or peppermint? both of those are known to reduce milk supply.

i ep'd for almost 6 months with #1 until i could get him to nurse. some also recommend brewers yeast.

Do you breastfeed at all in the night? I always take my babies to bed with me and feed them in the night as they want...not had any trouble. Just a thought

looking at the picture in her sig, it looks as if the cleft her little man has would make actual nursing pretty difficult. i can't tell if it goe all the way through the palate or not, but it cna make things VERY difficult for breastfeeding at the breast, even with an sns.

i am wondering if there is any update here.
