anyone have advice for nursing through excruciating pain?
i developed a red, tiny blister looking thing on my nipple when isaac was 1 week. at 2 weeks, w/ lots of soaking in hot water,it opened up. now, it is a big ole sore that looks like a little chunk is missing from my nipple.
does this sound like anything anyone else experienced? how long did it take to heal? my pain tolerance is wearing a little thin.
my best friend (juliebelle) and her mom (georgiadoula) have watched me nurse and think that we're doing everything correctly now, so i should not be causing further trouble. most cracked or bleeding nipples don't take so long to heal from what i've heard, so i'm having trouble with this issue dragging on so long!
Have you tried vitamin e? I just bought the vitamin e capsules and used a pin to make a whole and spread it on my nipple after every nursing. This worked GREAT for me
Sounds like it could have been a boil...they sometimes leave "holes" after they drain...I dont have any advice but I hope you get to feeling better...hang in there....
When I had thrush I used these things called Soothies, like little gel inserts you put in your bra. You put them in the fridge first, and they are so nice and soothing! I think they help you heal quicker. I remember those days of nipples that hurt worse than childbirth. Just know that it will pass. And you are doing the best for your baby. And someday you will look back on this and feel so proud that you were able to nurse through difficulties.

my aunt had one and it lasted quite awhile, but heres never opened. I agree with vitamin E thpugh or even try aquaphor, but you'd have to wash it off I believe before nursing.
I had that with all my babies in the beginning - it is horribly painful. One thing that helped me was getting vented nipple sheild thingys so that the fabric of bra would stay up off there. Can't wear them all the time - but even some of the time seemed to help with healing (otherwise wearning NOTHING on top is good too). I took a lot OTC pain meds like advil/tylonal (in combo) and also putting ice on right before latching the baby can help numb it a bit. Hang in there because it will get better and I know how hard it is to nurse through that. Happened every time for me.

Tylenol is fine to take while nursing, and so is tylenol with codeine (I don't think that Advil is okay, though). A friend of mine with badly cracked nipples when her son was a newborn took tylenol with codeine for it (her OB prescribed it) and it allowed her to get through a few rough days. I believe small amounts of codeine do enter the breastmilk, but not enough to affect babe in any substantial way. I have taken it once while BFing (and my son is almost 4)-- a couple of months ago when overboiled microwave water exploded in my eyes. It had no obvious impact on him, although of course he isn't nursing at near the level that an infant is.
If she's doing everything correctly, then pain control is the main goal. Obviously this is really painful if she's posting for help here. She needs relief now, and trying to cope with pain is extremely stressful. I'd recommend a call to her OB or family doc for a tylenol/codeine prescription.
Advil is fine - I was told that by my OB and family doctor - at least in my case. I was told to take 1 advil and a tylonal together as they work differently and that would be o.k. BUT I was told not to take codiene. I only got that in the hospital after C-section. Sent home on just advil/tylonal both times.
Not sure why they said no codeine for me - all three are o.k. (advil, tylonal and codeine) according to the kellymom site. Just don't take Advil during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. It's approved for nursing though - same category as Tylonal - L1. Codeine is risk L3

Thanks for correcting me about the Advil-- I much prefer to take it, but obviously had it stuck in my head that it was a no-no with nursing.
I dunno why your doc said no codeine-- perhaps he's one of the old-school pain doctors, who believe that people get addicted to the stuff or that it's bad for babe. Most "modern" approaches to pain relief are much looser than they used to be, so some less currently educated doctors may be more reluctant to dispense codeine.
Codeine sure works a lot better than advil or tylenol, though.
sounds as painful as the bleb i had with journey. at the time she only nursed one side at a time so i just pumped the side that hurt (only had to do it 3 or 4 times). it actually hurt less than her nursing it. other than that keep using the soothies & take tylenol or whatever you can. there were times i just cried & winced at the thought of her nursing with me in such pain, but it was well worth it to get thru it....i know you will too!
Is there any way you can pump that side? When I was in pain the second week, I would just nurse from the side that hurt the least and rest the other one.
Sorry you're going through this. It will get better...
I had severe pain in the second week of nursing too. One thing that got me thru was putting on a bit of baby Orajel before nursing. It numbed me up just enough so that my toes didn't curl. Good luck, and it will get better. Sounds like you've gotten great advice on how to get the skin to heal.
