thanks so much. mamas! i was out most of the afternoon and night yesterday. logged on this a.m. and was so excited to see all of the advice. i have not even thought about pain medicine, and i have not tried pumping YET. i have been using lansinoh, soothies, going topless around the house, praying lots , and just taking it a feeding at a time. i am so grateful for more ideas and things that have worked for all of you.

i love this place already!

I've been throught that too, with my second daughter. I actually put neosporin on the place where the skin wasn't healed yet. I wiped it off before a feeding, but it helped me to heal much faster. I also nursed on that side second every time so she wasn't quite as hungry, so she didn't suck quite as hard. I went through the crying and lip biting, but it will get better. You can do it.

I have actually weaned him from that side, and he's nursing exclusively on the other side. Although it has healed some, the sore is still there...after 2 weeks. someone suggested neosporin, but i have not tried it yet. will get some tomorrow now that you say it worked. won't even have to wipe it off. but...i really need it to finish healing...and then i need to decide if i will try to build up my supply on that side again or re-lactate or whatever may be needed. thanks so much for helping me not feel so wierd!

Tons of hugs to you! I was in excruciating pain for the first eight weeks I nursed my oldest daughter. I tried everything--including cranial sacral therapy to adjust Veronica's trouble latching. It was horrible. That coupled with the baby blues had me over the top!!!

I took a lot of Advil. It was the only thing I could do and I slowly weaned myself from it. I also used a nursing pillow because it really helped me work on the latch on adjustment.

I also used the Soothies pads and Lansinoh.

Good luck, Sugar. I hope it passes quickly.

I'm going to make a recommendation not yet made - go to a lactation consultant.

I had terrible nursing pain and, by all observable appearances, I was doing everything right. It hurt soooooo bad that I could seriously understand why women would give up. Went to the lactation consultant and found out something about the inside of his mouth that made things more difficult and painful. Helped change a few things about the way we were nursing and I started healing much more quickly.

Maybe the lc will say, "yup, everything is as it should." But, maybe they'll find something that isn't otherwise noticeable and will help. Wouldn't it be worth it to find out?

Also, the lc I used said that if I started fantasizing about weaning, that I could nurse one side two feedings in a row to give the otherside some down time and then switch. Or, if it was really bad, nurse one side for 24 hours (while pumping from the other) and then switch.

Big hugs.

i have been working with one here in town who hasn't been so helpful and one via telephone who has been awesome. i've also gotten a ton of support from LLL, juliebelle (best friend) and our doula/my second mom. i feel like i have exhausted my possibilities for advice...and am so grateful to have the support!

update-- ds seems to have lost weight since nursing him on one breast, and now the ped is following him...oh it's a really horrible feeling. nursing on the right side again- without pain - although it doesn't look as though the sore is all the way healed! taking fenugreek and blessed thistle, eating oatmeal, drinking lots of water, waking ds up every 2 hours at night , pumping and supp with SNS...exhausted just thinking about it!

ordered more milk plus as suggested by LC. she thought i should try this rather than going with domperidone, although she has lots of experience with the latter.

so...my bf drama goes on. just desperate for ds to gain...or at least maintain. send all your milk making vibes this way!!!!!!

Does typing this while pumping help with the more milk vibes?

Sending those.

so sorry your in pain

i am going through the same thing right now. my little man is 3 1/2 wks old and the pain is not good. i have been to a lactation consultant and the LLL. They say i have big nipples and as he grows his mouth will get bigger and it will feel better. my ds also has reflux so he eats all the time.
i too have the blistered-like nipples and am using soothies, sheilds and earth mama angel baby nipple butter. i drink milk maid tea too. you are really lucky to have all of this support. i think i am going to take your advice and try tylenol. ill let you know how it works and you keep me posted as well. ill try anything right now that takes that "clothes your eyes, cringe and curl your toes feeling away"

I didn't read all the posts so forgive me if I say something someone else already has.
You can try a couple drops of Rescue Rememdy right on the nipple and orally too if you want, it should really help with the pain and healing.
Also, are you having any problems with thrush? If so, you may need to treat for that too. Gentian Violet will help if it is a fungus.
