Question about breastfeeding your adopted child

I'm new here, but I have a question maybe someone can answer. I am adopting a child from china in November due to infertility, but really wanted to be able to breast feed my baby. Is ther any way to breast feed an adopted child? I know I have heard of medication for mothers having trouble lactating, can you use it if you've never lactated? can you use herbs instead? any information would be greatly appriciated! thanks, kenya

Here's a recent thread about the subject:

You might want to contact a La Leche League leader in your area or I can send you the contact info for mine who has nursed two adopted children. I'm not sure what the differences are between nursing and adopted baby when you've lactated before versus where you've never lactated. I'm sure someone here will have great answers for you! Welcome!

Most adoptive moms are not able to make a full supply. However, many mamas make lots of milk and supplement, either with a Lact-Aid or with a bottle. I would definitely talk to your doc about this.

Domperidone is a medication you can use to increase supply. You have to get it from Canada, but it works really well.

Here is a wonderful site that can be a great resource for adoptive breastfeeding:

Good luck!
