What are you reading right now?

I'm reading Mad Cowboy. I'll probably start Fat Land after I'm done. I'm also reading A Goddess is a Girl's Best Friend, but I just read a section here and there.

Mad Cowboy

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...854465& itm=1

Mad Cowboy is about the meat industry, written by an ex rancher and farmer. It's very interesting and pretty scary at the same time. Well it is for me, anyway.

Sounds like something I should read. My brother's gf is the dd of a man who ran a slaughtering facility - she's now a vegetarian. That speaks volumes to me, kwim?

I am almost finished "East of Eden" (yes oprah book club book) very good book and I am reading "The Read Aloud Handbook" and "Fast Food Nation" both excellent and informative.

I think I may read the "Mad Cowboy", that sounds like a great follow up for Fast Food Nation. I have totally changed how I feel about eating meat in general, but have totally stopped eating fast food since reading this.

"Wyrd Sisters" by Terry Pratchett. My first fantasy-type book other than Harry Potter. It is really good.

A novel that tells a lot about the beef ranching industry is "My Year of Meats." It is scary. I didn't eat meat for a month after reading it

Not "reading" but listening to the unabridged version of Stienbecks "Travles with Charlie" I'm loving it. And it is helping me excercise because I'm only aloud to listen when I'm working out. No it doesn't help increase my heart rate but it does force me to get off my bum and that is a huge hurdle.

waiting for my books to get here

They are:

Absolutely American by David Lipsky
Jarhead (don't know the author).

Absolutely American is by an editor at Rolling Stone who was granted unlimted access to West Point. He went in with a class and spent all four years with them. What interests me is that he came out wanting to go native. He gained such respect and admiration of the people there. I am just dying to read about his experience.

The other is one that my dh is interested in (as a jarhead who was in Gulf I). So, I thought that I would read it, too.

Other than that, I have been reading (ahem) magazines, some trash (In Style, etc.) and some decent (Atlantic Monthly and Harper's).

Just finished The DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. Both are fabulous! Currently trying to catch up on a stack of Mothering magazines.
