DH made these for the kids for Christmas. I made the cloth out of that silk essence stuff from JoAnn's. Got it on sale for $1.99/yard. Woo Hoo!

Wow, that's very cool! Josiah has the same lantern. :) How did you finish the edges of the silk?

Well, I ended up leaving the selvege edges the way they came off the bolt! They have a slightly fringy edge that I thought looked neat (and it was 10:30pm the night before Christmas Eve, my last chance to sew!). For the cut ends I just folded over and ironed twice (about 1/2" each fold) and then ran a straight stitch close to the inside fold. Does that make sense?

And yes, those are those plastic dress up heels dd is wearing in the princess skirt picture from my other post. My mom got them for her and she loves them but it will be a miracle if she doesn't break her neck in them!

He said it's Poplar. It's not quite as soft as pine but still a soft wood.

I totally fell in love with the stands I found here: http://www.islandtreasuretoys.com/ so I printed out the pictures and jotted down the dimensions they gave and he went from there. The stands were the easy part. The awnings were more difficult. It took the 2 of us about 45 minutes to come up with a curve we were happy with. I am always surprised at how good Dave is at winging it with this stuff! It always turns out way better than I imagined! Last year he made dd a dollhouse that is awsome. I saw one in the Magic Cabin catalog that I loved so he used that as a general idea and made the rest up.

The stands now have silky fabric "doors" on each end so the kiddos have thier own little cave! They have had sooo much fun with these!

My hubby is like that too. He is currently working on a soap display. He made my son the cutttest toddler bed that he saw in a catalog..
