View Full Version : I got my award letter today... I GET TO GO TO SCHOOL!!!!!!

I have been accepted and all that jazz... have been just waiting to see how much in grants I was able to get before getting too excited. I just checked my student center today online and am awarded with 9630.00 in grants! 5350 of that is from Pell Grant. (Also 5500 in loans that I don't want to accept)
Now I have to decide whether I should just dive in and take more classes than I was planning to since... I have the chance to. This will more than cover classes and books. But I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I haven't been to school since 1996! I'm looking at my class list and seeing if I can find 12 credit hours on here that will be manageable...
Waiting for my credit transfers to post as well so I even know what all I need.
I'm SOOOOO excited!!!!!!! :)

That's great!! , where does one start to look for grants?

I only filled out the FAFSA right after we filed our taxes in February. From that I got the Pell Grant, some WI Higher Education Grant (3280.00) and 1000.00 Supplemental Education Grant.
It's best to file the FAFSA asap though... some state grants have early deadlines.

Congrats! You can decline all of the loan that you don't need. :)

Ok, I am FLOORED by the amount of grants you got!!! That is an amazing opportunity, I am so excited for you (and very jealous! this $6K out of pocket this past year has killed us!!).

We had an EFC of 0000 this year but this is will be the only year I get this much. Part of why I will kick myself if I don't take advantage of it. We most likely won't get very much at all next year.
But... I think I'm starting to come down from my high and realizing that it's not going to be beneficial to take too many classes and end up burnt out or needing to drop something. Everyone is suggesting I just start off with 2. I can always kick it up a notch in the spring I guess if I think I can.
It *has* been 13yrs since I have been in school. And I'm doing it online so I may very well have to get used to the self discipline of needing to get work done. I'm a bit of a procrastinator....
And thank you guys. I started crying when I saw my award letter. I have been so nervous I wouldn't be able to go.

Well we had an annual adjusted gross income of 12,000 one year and an EFC of 0 and got FAR less than that in grants (this was 6 years ago). So, I think that is fantastic.
If you are taking easier classes, I think you could handle three just fine.

Yeah I have no idea how it's so high. A good portion of it is state related.
See, that's what I'm thinking too.

Anything 101 is going to be easier... I took sociology and political science this year and they were EASY!

Oh and I also took criminal justice.
IMO, avoid literature classes, english classes, history classes... because these will be reading/writing intensive.

Yeah I'm not doing those right now. I was told to wait on math and english etc anyway until I see what transfers. So I'm just picking from the safe areas.
of course the Intro to Political Science isn't available for that semester. Didn't think of that when I posted these that some might not be available. haha. guess it narrows it down a bit more now...

I went back to school this year. I have gone off and on (mostly off) for 15 years and I was super nervous, it had been about 4 years since I had gone. I found that I had turned into one of those super organized "mom" students lol and things were much easier than I remembered. I wish I had had this level of maturity when I was in school years ago.

Well I can only hope I gain that much organization as well! Having Jonas home still might make me a bit frazzled

How wonderful!!! I was going to apply through FAFSA and actually did the online app and when my school sent their's to me in the mail I never did do it. I got pregnant and kind of forgot about it. Now I'm chugging along taking 1-2 classes at most each semester just so I can afford it.
Ok, I am FLOORED by the amount of grants you got!!! That is an amazing opportunity, I am so excited for you (and very jealous! this $6K out of pocket this past year has killed us!!).I started back to school two years ago and we've paid out so much out of pocket for tuition/books. It's a community college and in-state so it's not horrible I guess, but it's a lot. :(

I take it a lot more seriously this time around. I just wish I would have conquered it all back then since I have less time in a day at this point. :p
I see 4 that would be 100 level and look like fun! Introductions to Anthro, Religion, Women's Studies, and American Indian Studies. That Philosophy and Racism looks neat, too.
(I'm totally jealous, because I've maxed out all my humanities and elective stuff, and have a year's worth of business and senior level math)

Thank you so much!
I already picked and registered for my classes so now I just have to sit and wait until fall I suppose. I sure got on this far in advance eh?
I am taking The Exceptional Individual. and Educational Psychology. I'm VERY excited about the Exceptional Individual one. The course said it's great if you can bring real life experience into the class. Well having a nonverbal autistic child counts for that I guess! ;)
I also am signed up for a 1 credit class for LEC 100. I guess it's good for returning students.
I'm taking Statistical Psychology through ALEKS so that will be an additional 3 credits for only 20.00. Hubby is urging me to take some CLEPS as well but I am nervous. I can take them for free. So I guess it's worth a shot...

Oh and I was led towards these classes by my adviser since I told her I want to major in speech pathology. So they will be great for that direction :)
have I said how excited I am?????
Do you need Freshmen Composition? I have a CLEP study manual and CD I could send you if you can use them. It was really super easy to CLEP out of that class. :)
You're lucky you can take CLEPs for free! It was something like $80 for the one I took, but that's still cheaper than tuition and books for a class I didn't even feel like taking. ;)

Thanks :) I took Eng 101... I assume that was comp? So I think I'm all set there at least!
And I only get to CLEP free because of hubby still being reserves. His letter of resignation is put in but it will take like 6mos to process. So he's bugging me about doing it while I can. He tests a LOT better than I do though so it's easy for him to say

You'll know better what you might want to CLEP once you have the transfer stuff sorted. My AP exam was counted at Eng 102 at my new school, so I had to CLEP Eng 101 - that had never been the case anywhere else.
It's not that stressful - even though CLEPs sound like they're STDs, they're usually just multiple choice tests on a computer. Like taking a goofy online quiz. ;)

It's actually all posted, yay! I ended up with 33.66 credits :lol
DH did say I should CLEP speech. Since I HATE speech... I can't stand the thought of taking a speech class. He said that all he had to do was speak into a microphone. He actually failed it because of some stupidity on his part about not knowing what he was talking about haha. I forget exactly. He has gotten Instructor of the Year awards so it's kind of funny. So I'm going to look into that.

Crystal, are you sure you can do CLEPs for free b/c of reserves? Peter is still active duty so I checked into whether or not spouses can also CLEP for free and they say only the military person can. :-/
That's sooo cool you get to go back! I was so excited when I started too. It's good to have something you are doing for YOU, yk?
