..Jacob did 4 lessons in his Geometry book. He's sick and I thought he'd gone upstairs to sleep, but he was doing Geometry. He finished Algebra I last year and is now zooming through Geometry. Math is, and always has been, his 'thing'. He thinks in numbers - it's fascinating to watch. He actually didn't like Geometry at first because he said there weren't enough numbers. Now he's digging it.

I'm not sure what to do next. Algebra II is the logical choice. I need to get my head out of the sand and seriously work on how this work is going to translate to high school credit. I've avoided it because I feel that we are in such limbo now. For those who don't know - Chris is retiring in 2010. We had our house on the market for a year with plans to move on to SC when it sold. With the housing market the way it is, we just can't make hardcore plans at the moment - I don't know when we will be able to sell this house. I know we won't be here (in Maryland) when he's in high school, but I'm not in SC right now to make concrete plans. It's giving me a headache.

Oh, and right now he's writing down the words to 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' - so he's a man of many interests.

That's so great!

I'm not sweating the high school thing. I've finally decided. :D Here is my "plan". Maybe there is something in it that will spark something for your son too.

I've decided to do Algebra and Geometry simultaneously. After doing EPGY's combined approach, I love the idea of them working together. It's all so intertwined. It may take him longer to get through both, or maybe not!

Then, he can pass the math section of the H.S exit exam, and move onto Jr. College for higher level math. I don't think Airon's different way of thinking about numbers and math excludes him from getting something very beneficial from a variety of different math teachers.

Even if he attends a high school at some point, he can stay enrolled having completed the math portion of the exit exam. He can actually attend Jr. College without a high school diploma.

You're planning to homeschool Jacob in high school? If so, there's no reason you can't start giving him credit now. My hs mentor starts recording in 7th grade the high school credit. Her oldest went to college a year early because she had accumulated enough credit at home to move on.

I hope to homeschool him through high school and he's quite vocal about not wanting to go to school 'until college'. But I have to be realistic and with the economy the way it is, I may need to go back to teaching (for $$ :D) at some point so I want to be prepared for either possibility. I just really want this uncertainty about when we're moving to be over - I want to be home in SC instead of making plans long distance.

Lisa, you know I completely get this. I have no clue how we are going to handle any of the high school stuff. Who knows where we will be and for how long.

That said, if it weren't for the military moving us so often, we wouldn't be in Hawaii right now. And I cannot complain about being in Hawaii.

I, on the other hand, have been stuck in suburban DC for 18+ years. I can't wait to get out of here!!!!

I think I didn't understand the question or maybe there was no question.

I hope you are soon able to move too. :)

No, you understood. The question is the same as it's always been: What do I do with this child?? :badidea:

Have you looked into AoPS? I guarantee that it will slow him down a bit and make him dig a lot deeper. It will make him think about math in a way that is completely different from the approaches offered in most of our US curricula.

Yes, I have been looking into AoPS. I like what I've been reading about it, but I'm faced with my usual problem of balance between the never-ending quest for something better and consistency. I'm afraid that I made the mistake of too many changes with Brianna since she was the oldest, so that's always on my mind.

He really likes TT and I like the way each problem is completely explained. Chris won't touch his math so it's all me. I think I may get both - wouldn't hurt and he would still have the format he has requested with TT.

I think we are going to use the Key To series to solidify up my oldest two's knowledge of decimals, percents and fractions. Then next school year start on AoPS Intro to Alegbra (Austin will be 7th gr, Nate 6th gr). I like what I see... and I need time to think about whether we would want to do the online class or just get the books and do it on our own. I think the online classes would be easier to account for credit. I thought about starting it now - but I want to make sure both of these kids have their ducks in a row with the three other topics. Does that make sense?

So you think once they start higher level maths (Algebra I) we should start keeping formal records for credit?

(sorry to hijack your thread, Lisa)
