In my online nutrition class we have to do a weekly Nutrition Debate. We are given a topic to write about then we have to respond to another student's post.

I chose to respond to a girl who posted that breastfeeding causes vitamin D deficiency. She came to that conclusion after reading an article that didn't actually say what she thought it did. I really think it was a bit over her head and she seemed biased against breastfeeding.

In any case, I responded saying that I think she had missed some key points the author was trying to make and then backed my comments up with facts and an article. Ultimately, I received full credit from the instructor and a compliment that my response was well written.

Yesterday I logged in and saw an email from the student that I responded to. She said that I was rude to her and that she meant to say XYZ (but never actually said it in her OP). She concluded by saying that I didn't follow the rubric for the assignment.

I responded and said that I was sorry that she felt I was rude. I explained that I wasn't personally attacking her but rather someone who is passionate about breastfeeding awareness. Of course, I ended the email by telling her that I received full credit for the assignment and a compliment from the instructor. ;)

Really, I think that she's either a dual-enrollment student or fresh out of high school. I'm not too worried about it but I have to admit it was a little fun. :D

Ah, just admit it - you miss all of that high-school drama!

Though shouldn't even high-schoolers know better than to debate with an Amity mama about breastfeeding?

Oh geesh. Get a life! (the other girl, not you ;) )

I'd love to be able to talk about something remotely as interesting in my online class discussions (often set up in a similar way, btw).

You should see the discussions going on in my autism ed class and criminal justice class!

I've taken dozens of online classes and, at least here, nearly half of every class is comprised of students who think taking a class online will be easier or that they can cheat and have their buddies or others do the work for them. If you have a good instructor they won't get very far with that kind of thinking.

I can usually pick them out in the introductions. When they claim their hobbies are drinking beer and picking up chicks, or for the girls -- tanning, you can pretty much gauge the caliber of work that's likely to be put out.

Secretly, I find it fun to mess with them too :p.

Congrats on the full credit!

I would have had to say something about that as well.

LOL - I have something similar going on in my online class. Well, I haven't made any enemies yet, I hope, but I am the lone defender of homeschooling in a conversation about it in my education class. Everybody has no experience with it, like, "I heard of somenoday who homeschooled once, and they fell behind and couldn't get back into public high school." Or "they probably have trouble getting into college..." Um yeah, that's why homeschoolers are 37 percentage points higher in college admission rates...

You should see the discussion we're having on political art during slavery. I'm wondering where my instructor is though because it's deteriorating very quickly. I'm amazed at the lack of shame for racist feelings. I know people are racist, but most people are able to just shut up about it when it seems appropriate to do so. Not in this class. Yeesh.
