I just couldn't seem to find free barrels for rain this summer. I *thought* I had access to 2 barrels but when I went to get them they were so full of ick and greasy goo that I walked away. I can handle gross, but not degreasers and such.
So I abandoned the watering system about a month ago until I could figure out something else. Clean barrels aren't cheap if you don't have a source, ya know.
Anyway, today I stopped out to visit with dh and he said "uh sweetie, are those chemical barrels yours?" What barrels? He points me to 10 blue plastic barrels, in really good shape all neatly lined up on the back edge of our property, I might add.
No. I didn't arrange that. What was in them?
I don't know, he said. But I was going to call the fire dept if someone doesn't fess up here pretty quick to dumping them here.
They had yellow placards (not red) so I trotted through the weeds in my flipflops to read the labels. Organic peroxide. No way!!! Ha!
Load 'em up baby. They're mine now.

 I remember when I was young driving up north in Maine to get big barrels with my aunt. They were used for apple cider and we were using them for floats under the docks at the wharf.
What is your set up for them going to be like? Where is the water coming from (I assume a roof)? Are you going to use a hose for watering? Just thinking ahead on how I could add these to the greenhouse maybe.
We gathered our water from the roof of my Dad's like this for the sink, shower, toilet, etc since we didn't have "running water". We always had a rain barrel.

Still too much rain? ugh.
Now remember, this all works in my head...application is another story. lol.
I'm going to install spigots/faucets into the barrels, then connect them to soaker hoses that are woven into my gardens. All shut offs will be on the barrels.
The barrels will be under the downspouts for maximum collection.
I forgot to look, I think the covers are hard sealed, not removable. If that's the case, I'll have to cut into them so I can crawl in the barrels and install the faucets. That'll be a great picture.
If I have to do that, I'll make up (fiberglass) screens with elastic....like a fitted sheet or tablecloth for the top.

Yeah. I checked them over again and the tops don't come off. There are screw off caps...but only as big as a pop can. There's no way I'd be able to get a tap into the bottom of them. Or at least not anyway that I can come up with.
