MaryJanesFarm | Farmgirl Connection (http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/farmgirl-connection/)
My MIL showed me this magazine yesterday. She told me she bought me a subscription for my birthday....
I appreciate some of the info in the magazine, but I haven't decided what I think of this...

It's very heavily marketed/branded, isn't it? Keep us updated with what you think. I've never seen the mag, just her website.

Do you mean she's selling advertising space in her magazine, or the self-marketing of "buy my products"?
I LOVE her earlier magazines (the newest one I've seen is over 2 years old now), and I love her book. Yes, there is a lot of self-promotion, but she's running a business, so she's going to promote that.
That said, I really do love MJ! (my BIL was disappointed though, with her "Cookbook/Lifebook"...in his words "it's just not what I expected for a book with MaryJane in the title!"... )

I don't know what I think about the magazine. I definitely will read it. The issue my MIL had had plans for a backyard greenhouse and a really cute little hen house. I'm not into "country" fashion and decorating so much, and that was a big part of the whole thing. I guess I'm a little taken back by folks who live in the city and go to their farms (second homes) on weekends and summers, which is what it appears the editor of this mag does, but I really have only briefly perused the magazine and barely looked at the website, so I'm speaking off the cuff.
I'm guessing there's lots of good information, even if you're not interested in buying her huge organic product line, etc. It also appeared to hold and support "country values," which I appreciate.

I'm really not familiar with the magazines and I'm speaking off the cuff too, just what I've seen of her website and forums. I just find the juxtaposition of food in a pouch and other ready-made type products, and the farm aesthetic, which is so tied with living simply, jarring.
I'm looking at a couple of her pages now, and I guess I just find the super-self-promotion a little sickening. You can market yourself without being so over-the-top, yk? I can't quite put my finger on *how* her marketing herself bugs me, maybe it's all that "you and me, we hug each other and pick tomatoes from my wonderful, glorious garden" type writing. It's a little - cloying? I dunno. It strikes me as a little less than authentic.
Meh, it's just my taste I think - no offense to anyone who likes her. I have tried, and I just can't get past the tone.
I thought the forums were great :D I would have to see a magazine before passing judgement I think.

I enjoy it. I find it light and fluffy just like whipped cream. :)
I read novels with no real redeeming social value too though.

 That cracked me up, Stacy. And a very apt description.
I *want* to enjoy it. ;) Because I can see how it should be entertaining at the least. That's why I keep posting in this thread. Trying to figure out why every time I start reading there, I click around and go eh, never mind. :p

She does live on her farm...the nearest "city" is about 2 hours north.

And, I guess artificial is kind of the word that was lingering in my brain. Again, don't get me wrong, I'm sure she's a nice person, and she has good info there. And a little whipped cream never hurt anyone....but I won't likely start making split skirts from antique linens anytime soon. And, I did find a Farmgirl group in my town, and that *might* prove to be a good thing, YK?
