I gotta type this out because I'm still reeling.

I'll set the stage...
My sil and bil were over picking up ds for a playdate. Sil had her obnoxious terriers with her. I put my dog in because she has zero tolerance for trespassing dogs.
sil: Katie, can I go check out your chickens?
me: sure

So I'm chatting with bil in the drive when I hear sil saying "no, stop that."

*ding* OMG, She took her dogs with her into the coop.

I rounded the house and 3 chickens were already out of the fence, 2 yorkies were nothing but a blur and my chickens and their feathers were all over the freaking place.

I'm now in the coop and I have one dog by the scruff and chasing the other. Sil is useless.

I throw dog#1 over the fence to bil and I can NOT get ahold of #2.

I left MY dog in the house so she wouldn't shred sil's dogs and now I'm looking at her flipping out on the other side of the house window and ready to make that split-second decision: Do I abandon my pursuit and get my dog or continue chasing #2 who is now ripping feathers from my chickens?

Then the unthinkable. BIL (dumb ass) puts dog #1 down to come HELP me.....hello...I have 3 chickens OUT of the coop. Dog #1 is now chasing a chicken away from the house.

My daughter heard the commotion and is coming out of the house. She's pushing lillie-dog back in to the house and I felt the color drain from my face. (my kids are trained. If I've left the dog inside while I'm outside, there's a reason.)

I screamed at dd, "let that god-damn dog go!!!" But lillie already knew, she burst through that door like a shot and and I'm already pointing at the chicken/dog chase now 100 yds away and have her on command "GET 'EM LILLIE!!!!!

Now armed with a rake, I scooped up dog #2 and flip it to sil. DON'T put it down again, got it?!!

Meanwhile, super dog Lillie has transformed into a greyhound, 0-100 in 2 seconds. She couldn't separate the chicken who is now running and dragging a dog, but she rounded them and was bringing them right at me....who was waiting with that rake.

I dropped that rake so hard on that dog, I'm sure he hit china at least twice.

No one lost their life today, including my sil. But it was sure close.

longest 4 minutes of my life.

Sigh. City folk.

Hugs to you and your chickens! Congrats on letting sil live, mighty strong of you ;) And YAY for a good doggie!

Terriers have a mighty hunting instinct. I've seen mil's scottie catch (and eat) birds that were in flight.

I thought I exhibited huge restraint too. ;)

my lillie-dog *is* the bomb. I brag her up a lot.

I've got plenty of mending to do tonight at roosting time. One is bleeding from the beak and I think one (the one dragging the dog) could have a flesh wound too.

I was going to try to do mending now but they're all too upset. So I'll let the shock settle with fresh feed, scratch, a healthy dose of vitamin water and a quiet coop.

oh I believe that. The chickens ran and I could see the chase switch flip on. Nothing would shut it off. ugh.

yeah, terriers are not a good mix with animals and sometimes even children that scream and run and play around them!

I am so sorry that you went through that but glad all is well!!

What did your SIL and BIL say????? I can't imagine them not being very humbly sorry!

 How scary...reminds me of our dog attack...one of ours had a *severe* flesh wound (think 6x8" ripped off from her back) and she healed up okay. I did use some of my very special goldenseal powder on it to keep it from getting infected.

How scary!

Be forewarned that dogs can put some nasty infections in chickens so check them over really good.

Poor things! :-(

What kind of doggie do you have? I'd def. leave her out next time so if SIL is stupid enough to bring her hairy rats in, they won't get near the chickens.

Holy crap Katie... OMG I can't even imagine, your heart must have been going a mile a minute.

I really want to know what your SIL had to say for herself. Why on EARTH would she take her two stupid rat dogs out into your chicken coop? Does she think that is funny? Srsly? Did she really think that the rat dogs would love to go see the chickens and you would be OK w/ that?

What did she say when you hit her dog w/ the rake? I bet THAT upset her.

What did BIL say about all this? I bet your DH will rip in a new one for that!

Goldenseal powder...can i get that at a health food store? I was going to use neosporin. lmbo. Get the neo, it cures everything!!

My peripheral vision sort of went blurry during the whole thing. I do remember my sil saying over and over "oh my god I'm so sorry." and my bil saying something about she definitely knows how to handle a rake.

My sil was so mortified after the incident that she just sort of crawled in her car...bil kept saying what the F*** were you thinking and she said "I dunno. I dunno."

I just don't think she realized at all what would happen. Like Jenn mentioned, city folks.

If my sister had done that she'd be lucky to be alive:lol: But no worries around here because she doesn't like pets.

I hope your girls are okay. Goldenseal is great and you should be able to get it locally. Keep us updated.

Oh my goodness! Your poor chicks! I wonder why she would have allowed the dogs into a coop??

ok good. I'll try to find some.

I went out a little while ago and sat and drank a cup of coffee in the coop....the one I'm most worried about came down from her roost to look at me. I hope thats a good sign. She'd been up there since it happened.

OMGosh. I was just in shock reading your tail. So relieved you didn't lose your chickens, so amazed that someone would do that, take dogs, any dog, into your chicken coop! And then I got to this line:

and my bil saying something about she definitely knows how to handle a rake.

and barked out loud! Too funny!

I think you need a t-shirt: "Back off! I know how to handle a rake."

Oh! Awful!

I'm so glad your girls seem okay. Blu Kote is a wonderful wonderful thing. I had an experience much like Lauren's with my dd's NannyCake. I mean, she had insides, outside. <shudder> Anyway, I literally glued her back together with the blu kote and she lived in my bathtub off my bedroom for like 2 weeks. And, while it turns your chicken purple, it keeps the other chickens from pecking at the wounds too.

I also picked up some antibiotic powder from the bovine section of the TSC and dosed the tiny bit for her weight, and put it in a bit of her water, just to be safe, since it's was my little girl's very very beloved pet.

I wonder if they'll lay? After a scare like that my girls have been known to stop laying for a day. . or three.

And  for your patience w/SIL.

Wow - what an experience. My heart was pounding just reading your description.
I'm with Rachel - You ROCK! :)

Katie

Marina, they haven't even started laying yet. Not for another 2 months.

Last night sil made some comment about bludgeoning her dog....it was off handed and she may have been trying to lightly jab that she was upset that her poor little prince could have been injured.

heh. I wasn't in the mood to joke.

I in turn "joked" that if anything was going to die today it was gonna be your dog, not my chickens.

That put conversation to bed. :chick:

dh and mil reported back that they'd both rcvd tearful phonecalls from her about the incident. tears? really? that's a bit much, but whatever.

Ooh - she acts like an idiot and wants sympathy for it? That would go nowhere with me!
I would have been right with you with your "joke"! :)

Oh man I can't believe she wants sympathy.

Goldenseal is endangered now and can be pricey. I used it because it was what I had on hand. Side story: I sent Matt out to get some postpartum with Jake, for the cord, the midwife recommended it for the stump. He came back with a big jar of powder - almost a pint jar full! - and it had cost $4. I think it was supposed to cost $40. :drop: A pound is $84. Not that you'd need that. But neosporin is much cheaper. :)
