I seriously had NO CLUE that people ate goats until I bought ours. Last night there were two different posts on the RI Craigslist for meat goats. I don't think i could ever eat a goat. I don't eat veal or lamb but I do eat red meat (although I plan to stop because of how it makes me feel physically).
There was also a 4 month old emu but DH shot that down with the threat of divorce...

Where do you buy goat to eat? at the butcher? I just don't ever recall seeing goat meat for sale and we used to go a to real small town butcher where you could see a pig head on ice (lovely sight by the way LOL).

I was just reading a news thing about how goat was.... not kosher, but some sort of religion allowed food.

No, I don't, but there are TONS of Boer goats around here and that's what people generally use for meat goats.
I'd just see it and hear it calling "Maaaaaaaa" and no way could I eat it then! hehe

Gordon Ramsey, that delightfully obnoxious chef, had a segment on goat. VERY lean, probably one of the best meats you could eat. BUT he said it tastes exactly like goat and made a face. :o

I don't think I have eaten it though I guess it is possible I don't remember and had some at some ethnic restaurant. Possible.
I think I would since I don't know any goats personally.
Rabbit would be tough for me to eat now since I have a pet who I have had several years and she looks like a jackrabbit and I have had a few pet rabbits in the past.

Goats are like puppy dogs. They follow you and love on you and talk to you. They're SOOOOO happy to see you when you come around. No, couldn't eat a goat. But then, I'm vegetarian, so totally not the person to ask! LOL

No, never have and didn't really know that it was such a popular meat until I got into goat milk. My friend says it is good... If you have a male that is not castrated, his meat will have that goatie hormone taste. If they are whethered they will not. That is what she says.
NOPE! I could not!!! They are just so nice and friendly. I also don't really see much meat on these animals... Is it cost affective? Doesn't look to be but I just don't know. I can't see going through all the trouble if ya just get a tiny bit of meat.
I will also add that I am a vegetarian ;).

Those Boer goats are much meatier than say, a Nubian milk goat.

I've smelled it (goat meat) and that was enough for me to know I wouldn't eat it.
I had a friends whose dh is from Pakistan and his mama would make goat for him in the traditional manner (because his wife would not lol). I was at their house once when he was eating it and it smelled funky. Like funk. Bad funk.
We were given some once, part of a young goat. It was really good, but since then I've been around baby goats and I just don't know how I could ever kill one, or eat one that had been born here, played with us, etc. My daughter wants milk goats, and much as I'd love to make cheese, I know that the males are usually castrated and then eaten when big enough and I just don't see myself ever going there.

I have eaten a lot of weird things I'm sure since we were so poor. My Gram came home one day and found my father skinning a muskrat hanging over the dining table by the light and he fed her salamanders once for dinner. So be flippant all you want - no harm
My goats are definitely like dogs. God forbid you walk out the door and ignore them. It's like a chorus. All they want is a little pet through the fence if you don't have time to go in and play.
Maya really wants a female goat for 4H. If she still wants one when she is old enough to show we will get it for her. We have wethers right now as pets. I know they sell them for meat but really they are an easy pet and we use their waste and bedding in the garden and they will keep down our back field to hopefully cut down on the deer and tick issues here.
Thinking about it I can see how people would raise them for meat if they didn't really interact with them. I know I couldn't kill anything that I had a "relationship" with as a snuggly pet who followed me all over.

I feel like I should be able to, but don't think I can. I never have eaten it.

Yup. It's good. Nice and lean. REALLY good with a curry sauce (curry powder, onions, garlic, salt and thyme) and rice!

I would and I have.
But just like somebody said - not if I established a "relationship" with them. Same goes for cows, chicken and other animals

It is common around here w/ the hispanic families. Dh has had it at work and we have sold kids intended for food, but I will not eat goat. Too strong for my taste.

There's some people around here from Jordan and they can't eat processed meat, so they can't buy their meat in the store. They raise goats in the back yard and slaughter them themselves to eat.
I also know several peole who raise goats just for slaughtering around the holidays. THey'll invite people over, have a big BBQ.
But I have never tried it myself. I don't know, I might try a bite, but I don't think I could sit down and eat a plate of it.
