I have 5 and when my ex and I were looking for somewhere to rent - it did take us a LONG time to find somewhere - people would hear "5 kids" and that was it. It's hard and I hope you find somewhere soon!

Do you have to tell them how many kids you have?

We haven't had a hard time renting with 4 but we typically are always in either a 3 bed or 4 bed house. We have friends here who are renting with 6 and they didn't seem to have a problem either. It may be the area and I personally don't mention how many children I have when looking at rentals unless i am asked directly.

With 9 people total, in Texas at least, you would need 5 bedrooms...because there can be no more then 2 heartbeats, over 2 years old, per room. Perhaps that is why you are running into problems?
