I love my husband. I really do. But sometimes his manliness runs for the hills and I am left to pick up where it left off.
Today I cleaned out the goat house and found a nice little nugget. As in, we have wethered goats that they castrated using a rubber band method. Eventually the little "gems" harden and fall off.
So, Rainbow lost his today and I just picked it up and threw it in with the shavings for the compost.
Fast forward a few hours when DH is outside in the dark with the dogs. Sophie is chewing on something :muaha: I hear my husband scream for me and I'm thinking the dog is hurt. I run out just to hear him say it isn't an emergeny but I needed to get the part and dispose of it. He then said his dog needed a breath mint

:hahaha: seriously ROFL!!!!
That is something we would do for sure but it would be the kids that tried to get it out of the dogs mouth and bring it to me in their hands!!!!
 Thanks for sharing that funny!

I guess there are 3 ways to castrate. Surgical, crushing the cord (can't think of the right name) that delivers semen or the elastic. The elastic is not my choice but it works and I suppose if you have lots of animals it's easiest. The one with crushing has to be done correctly or there are issues.

 Now on most of my animal boards, they say the band method is the least painful for them. I've heard way too many stories of surgeries gone bad when castrating goats. :-(

Also, when I was looking around at goats and sites and stuff about goats, etc... I came across some interesting info about wethered goats. They can suffer, later on with urinary tract infections... here is a book about diet that can help with that DIET FOR WETHERS found here: Goat Tracks Magazine: Journal Of The Working Goat: Bookstore (http://www.goattracksmagazine.com/bookstore.html)

Very true. We ordered the book already. Since we don't use medicated feed (we feed organically) we add a bit of ammonium chloride to their grain. We also keep an herbal treatment on hand just in case we have an issue come up.

I had to do a lot of research before getting the goats. I was lucky to find the Fias Co Farm website early in the search and bought the things they used.
I love my goats. they are driving my husband crazy

So disgusting, but you asked, LOL. They played ball w/ it, then took it apart, examined it. Then left it for the flies in the barn. It smelled horrid so there was an awful smell in the barn while milking for days. We have to band our newest calf very soon, in fact we should have already. Anyway the playthings of farm boys, LOL.
