I love this and it's what made me think of gardening not in raised beds. Can you imagine the cost of the fencing alone?

Holy crow!
Well...if I was Martha Stewart, I suppose I could afford it! hehe
Have you seen the chicken houses with gardens growing on their roof?

WHERE! I must see the chicken houses. Which totally gives me the idea to cover the roof of my coop (when I get one) with a garden of succulents.

Here are some pics ~ they call them living roofs or green roofs, from what I can gather.

dog house (but would be a cute little coop for a couple banties)

Gorgeous...but I don't think those are raised beds? That is how I do my rows - I hump up the soil higher than the surrounding area, and mulch the paths with straw like she's done. Make sense? They look just like raised rows to me without anything bordering them.

You're right. When I saw her gardens I was beginning to think I could do things without the raised beds. My issue has always been weeds and I never thought of using all that mulch.

Ok, so what I do is a "raised row".
I answered in your other thread but here is the link to the Marthas Garden pics...

Martha's garden is gorgeous, but seriously, do you think Martha goes into her garden except for pictures? :p

Oh sorry! I read your OP wrong...you said it was what got you thinking of doing it NOT in raised beds...I didn't read the not. :)
Yeah mulch has been working great for me. Just, I read about it, and tomatoes need heat, so you don't want to mulch too much around them (I had it all around/on top of the raised rows as much as I could as well) because it lowers soil temp. But again I read newspapers first then straw...which makes sense. Some of my weeds grew right through and now it's harder to weed through the straw (and I really needed another bale and didn't have it).

Wow, Katie.. She is a gardener!!! Need to go out to mine to snap some pics today! Not as big as hers (we decided to stay small since it was our first time together) but I am pretty proud of what 2 families accomplished together!
