My daughter was born on 6/08/08 and nursed right away after she was born. She would only take the right breast so I had the LC come in the next day to find out why. My milk came in right away and she was latching on no problem, but she told me my "nipples didn't come out enough for her to latch on to". Therefore I started using a nipple shield in the hospital and have ever since. I have read a lot of bad info about these, but it is the only way she'll nurse (I have tried to not use it). Just wondering if anyone else has used them.

I used them with my second child for a few months because she had a short frenulum (eventually snapped on its own).... This was 10 years ago but I do remember having to continue to try without them each time we nursed (or every other or so-when she wasn't "starving")
She went on to nurse like a bandit (I don't have nipples that stick out far either, in fact, one is just plain flat)....
congratulations and welcome to the boards!! Keep trying mama!~!!

I had to use a nipple shield for my flat nipples. I wish I had tried other methods of drawing them out first, but that's what I was given. I was finally able to stop using it when she was about 9 weeks old. I was really persistent with it and tried the bare boob every time and one day, she just did it! It was amazing! You just have to be persistent with it and it will happen.
