I like having a light scent throughout the house. I hate however those glade plugins or bath and body works plug ins.

What do you use in your house?

Scentsy warmers. I have one in the living room, one in each bathroom, and dd has one in her room(its hers). Scentsy: The Hottest New Thing in Candles (http://www.scentsy.com)

but you gotta have a lit candle under them right?

candles, electric tart warmer, an aurora lamp (http://www.auroralamp.com/) with a candle, potpourri, those oil diffusers with the reeds in a vase, and I have a couple fragrance lampes (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=unknown&sbrftog=1&dfsp=32&catref=C6&from=R40&satitle=fragrance+lamp*&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=63043&sabfmts=1&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32%26fsoo%3D2&fgtp=) (but I need to get new stones for them).

my electric tart warmer is like Angie's thing. It's electric...no candle. The scent eventually fades but then I just add some essential or fragrance oil to the melted wax to refresh it.

eta: I can't tell from their site if those take candles or not. But there are electric versions. Just search "electric tart warmer" at ebay. :)

I use essential oils on a small piece of cotton hidden around, or soy candles w/ essential oils. I hate those horrible plug ins and sprays, too.

I was always an eo user, but with the house going on the market, I broke down and got febreze vanilla candles. I don't even need to light them. They leave a light vanilla scent in my living room. It has a core to it that "eats" odors. I don't know if that works or not, but they were 1/2 of what yankee candles were. I found them at the grocery store. I also bought plug in type things for the first time. I bought vanilla and 2 other rain, garden, light scents. I put the vanilla in the kitchen (under the bench the girls sit at, so it is hidden), and the two other scents are in bedrooms and downstairs in the great room. I NEVER thought I'd do it as I'm sensitive to chemically scents, but these are all so light that I actually walk into a room and really like it. Who knew? I found them all at Safeway (regular old grocery store).

Nope they are electric. No candle. They are melted by a light bulb. One bar lasts about 80 hrs.

I have candles (yankee - sun and sand right now) on my mantle. I also have one on the half wall that overlooks the kitchen/dining room (yankee - farmer's market cinnamon berry).

However, I don't light them very often because of the kids - I have to be IN the room to do it.

Upstairs, I have method rings - they're just a little gelly smelly thing that slips into a ring holder. No heat, no plug-in, light scent. It's cinnamon bark. I also have those new Tide hanger gelly smelly things in my closet - they're lavender vanilla.

In the car, I have a gel thing hanging in the trunk - right now it's yankee, macintosh.

We've done the method reed diffusers, but they were REEEALLY strong at first. I had a grass somethingorother in the bathroom at the old house when we vacated and the second you opened the door you could smell it. I think those are cool looking, but inconsistent in scent level (either really strong when you open it or it fades and goes away quickly despite flipping the reeds).

tart burners and candles. I've got a weird plant ledge next to the stairs (the kids can't reach, but I can get far enough to change out the candle and when I need to, the tart), plus the kitchen window.. I've got enough high/out of reach areas where I can put candles and such.

I use EOs in my homemade cleaners as well, which helps.

Well, currently we have the very natural scent of a decomposing rodent that died in our wall. Lovely! This is definitely a huge drawback to both owning an old house and living near a lake. Ick-o!

Yeah, I'm thinking you don't want what we use!

Mostly, though, I don't use anything. I do like the almond scent of the stuff I use to clean the floors. Sometimes I do drip some EO on a piece of cotton or TP and just stuff it somewhere - mostly in the bathrooms.

Julie - are you looking for a non-candle option?

yea..i would like to have something non flammable.

i used a reed dispenser once and that was ok. i like almond scent and i do not like floral scents unless they are truly flowers.

i use candles. i get the hazlenut creme scent from walmart. (my kids are older so i can use candles even if i'm not in the room...couldn't when they were little.)

they also have a plug in that i use in the down bathroom with the same scent.

i also love yankee candle's peach scented candle. i go to the outlet near me in the spring and stock up for the year :)

oh...i also use a couple drops of EO (usually bergamot or wild chamomile) in my fountain in the office when it's on.

:o thank you! this made me smile (they just got off the bus and it sounds/feels like a stampede of elephants came through the house...the energy totally shifted from when my clients left here an hour ago  )

really...there is light at the end. it's nuts here most days when the kids are around but they're good boys and they don't swim in my table fountain, tempt fate with lit candles or climb the fridge at their ages :p

They sell cinnamon brooms at the dollar tree. You can just stick them in the corner, behind the couch ect. They make the whole house smell like cinnamon (they have other scents too) and they last for a while. They might be seasonal though, you'd have to check with your local dollar store. They really make the house smell good!!

For those that go the unnatural way and use store bought plug in things, what do you like best? We need something in the kids' bathroom! John is doing so well with pooping in the potty, which means more stink than before!

I don't like fruity, food smells (like cookies or whatever), or most floral. I like things like sandalwood, bergamont, etc.

vanilla nancy, or is that too foody? I like the lighter linens, ocean mist, rain type scents. Some are overpowering, but it seems the name brands aren't awful- at least at my grocery store.

You could choose to plug it in when needed and pull it out and set it somewhere hidden when not needed. I do that in our bathroom- b/c it is small and the scent is a little much 24/7.

reed diffusers work *really* well in a bathroom if you have someplace out of reach to put it. They last forever in a small room

I just saw plug-in things at Cracker Barrel. (I had to get a new one for my car).

Coconut Bay is what I ended up with - it's so yummy. Sun and sand smells divine, too. They're all kind of tropical smelling - not flowery, but not food-y either.

I was thinking I'd want something that could constantly work, not something I have to tend to, you know? I don't want to go have to go into the bathroom after John (or anyone!) uses it. And I certainly can't trust John to light something when needed.

Smart! In two bathrooms we do have shelves that they could sit on. In one we don't, but I could kind of hide it in the corner behind the clawfoot tub or something.

lately our home is dog scented
mud season plus dogs is a bad idea, lol.

I have a couple of bath and body works plug in thingys, that I like for the pumpkin scent in fall and the tree scent around christmas.
I mostly use essential oils in a couple of little burners and candles. I love candles.
we like incense too. :)

I smelled a ton more at the store the other day, lol. This is a whole new aisle for me as I always was a natural, no fake scents kind of gal. Definitely the slightly pricey name brands are the best.

oh...and one other option I forgot before...

at Lowe's and Home Depot they have these things that hook onto the air filter of your furnace/ac. They're pretty strong at first but then they mellow out to a nice, whole house scent. I use fragrance oil or essential oil to re-fragrance them.

Oh no Nancy!

Yk? It never really dawned on me to scent my home!

I open windows every day and love when something good has been baked and enjoy the scent of line dryed linens (that outdoor air really leaves a perfume smell!)

I think I would pick peach scent if I did scent though. Yum!

Nancy,

Has the eau de rodent passed yet? :( I am going to check on the method cleaner. Almond scent sounds terrific.

I always use a citrus scent in the bathroom. It cuts through any bathroom odor. I just have an unlit candle in the bathroom most times.

And I use Pine Sol cleaner. I have tried not using it... and going natural and with EOs... but it never smells clean unless I use Pine Sol. Must be because my mom used it and so it has that clean association from when I would clean the house.
