View Full Version : What to do about music?

DS is in public school, but I can see that he still needs help in music. He never brings home any papers, but I get unfinished papers from music with every report card. I'm already helping him with math (fractions now, ugh!) but that's easy to find online....
I have no way of going to any kind of lessons or anything, really I just want to help him grasp the major concepts his teacher has been working on, the "big ideas" and terminology. Could I poke through the library for specific titles? Can I find any worksheets online for quizzing him?
Music is just another of his grades that needs to be brought up - from a low D :( He did have an 80-something last quarter though. TIA :)

Are you talking about music theory? Does he play an instrument? What kinds of things are you interested in teaching?

I think you might want to get a topic sheet from his teacher, so you know where to start.

I do have a topic sheet, somewhere :o and a few recent papers that just look like didn't-do-it classwork. Music is only once weekly.
He's not playing an instrument other than recorder. It's more that he doesn't seem to care about music at all, unless he's listening to my iPod  He's not a very good metronome yet - seems to have no rhythm whatsoever - but he can sing a video game tune pretty well.
I just want him to have good grades in all subjects across the board. I don't want anything lower than a C, and this is one area I'm kinda lost in right now. I will need to go back to working for a while this Fall when they're both in school, but am open to just about anything until then. Maybe we should look into an instrument - has that helped other kids grasp the concepts better? I need to find that packet she sent home in August :o
OK maybe I'm more lost than I knew LOL

What grade is he in?
And playing an instrument never killed anyone (except that one person who swallowed a piccolo, and I don't think he actually existed except in someone's imagination). It does get pricey though, and it takes time and dedication on everyone's part.
Is he interested in playing an instrument?
