I'm trying to transition into buying more organic foods. What foods do you buy that are organic? or where should I start without killing the grocery budget?

anything with fat, first and foremost (fat holds the toxins)

so, olive oil, dairy, peanut butter, animal products, etc.

Then, things that can't be peeled or grow underground - potatoes, carrots, lettuces

eta: coffee - I always buy organic/fair trade now

Yes to what Sandra mentioned...fat, animal products, coffee

dirty dozen produce - the worst contaminated ones. Here's a good list...
Environmental Working Group || foodnews.org (http://www.foodnews.org/)

also potatoes, soy (tofu or miso) and corn because they are almost guaranteed to be GMO if they aren't organic

(now, if I am at the farmer's market where I can talk to the growers I might get uncertified of course - I just don't want Monsanto's crap) Actually, that is true of all of these products - if I can talk with the person who grows/raises it, I don't necessarily need to see an organic certification...

the only thing i *always* buy organic is milk, but it's only because of not being able to/chosing not to budget more for groceries right now. i dream of the day i can buy as much organic as i'd like!

the somtimes organic list...olive oil, peanut butter, meat, almonds (for snacks), apples, lettuce, spinach, frozen veggies, canned soups, canned tomatoes, cheese, yogurt

I'm a red vine gal ;)

(and PS to say I 'always' buy this stuff isn't completely true. I compromise where I need to when our budget calls for that....)

Milk, butter and chicken. We don't eat red meat but if we did I'd only get that organic too. I try to get organic cheese when I can at the hfs, but my regular grocery store only carries the shredded kind, and I don't like pre-shredded cheese.

Most of fruit/veggie stuff, dairy, occasional meat product all snacks that I get for my dd that I wouldn't buy otherwise (like crackers, dried fruit etc.) and one other thing - flour. We took a road trip a few years ago and it just hurt me to see these wheat fields. I grew up spending my summers in a farming area and they used to have lots of wildflowers along the edges of wheat fields. Now it is all gone. Also, I saw the planes circling and spraying...

I started with the dirty dozen and dairy though. And I have to say, I still get regular cheese because the organic selection is so slim and the taste is lacking in the available varieties.

always -- milk and eggs

I've been increasing the amount of organic produce that we buy, but that varies according to season and our budget. We seldom eat meat, but I'd buy organic if we did.

I've actually been buying more organic convenience type foods lately because we're trying hard to eliminate hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup -- and just from reading labels, I end up with the organic stuff more often than not.

I hope to get to the point where we're organic all the time on the dirty dozen produce and cheese... but we're not there yet.
