Where can I store food that isn't in my kitchen? My kitchen is small and I keep the cabinets full with the food that I'm currently using. I feel the need to start stockpiling basics like rice, flour, dry beans as the economy worsens and prices go higher and higher. Our bed is a king size and currently on the floor because it's easier for Atticus to climb out of. I can put it back on its frame, but should I store this stuff in to not attract critters? We don't currently and have never had an issue with critters here but then again we haven't stored a feast under our bed. Any other ideas?

rubbermaid or offbrand underbed storage containers would work.

Also we've used uuuuummm the basement, but only for rarely used dishes/appliances because it got damp there. If yours wasn't damp then it would work for well stored food (assuming you have a basement) or canned goods.

Um, we've also used where the washer/dryer go, the linen closet and other closets through the house.

I have a bookshelf that I hung a curtain over that I use for kitchen overflow ... large baking dishes/platters/etc. Could certainly work for cans/drygoods/etc. as well.

I actually love it in red, but wasnt sure if the red would match, so I bought black. I havent actually put it together yet though LOL but it really looked great.

Meghan - I'd have to see the space to know for sure. But, you can slide canned goods under your bed, for sure, even if you're worried about critters. I keep my beans and rice in glass as a general rule and they are on the floor of my "pantry" (which is just a few shelves in a SUPER shallow spot of the kitchen). You could also do pretty glass jars on top of the fridge, under the kitchen sink, in the bathroom vanity or linen closet, coat closet, etc. We've used pretty much every nook and cranny we could find for storage. (Moving coats to our own individual closet). But, I know you've mentioned having a modest apartment, and I'm not sure how reasonable any of this is for you.

OH - at the old house, I had glass block containers in two different heights up on the windowsill. The red lentils faded, but it worked great.

Hmmm, I have an extra closet that I shoved a shelving unit it for pantry space.

Older apts seem to have lots of weird little spaces- I have bathroom shelves that are to the ceiling and easily 2 ft. deep.

If you have room on top of the kitchen cabinets- you could store things in pretty jars or canisters and put them up there. Under bed, floor space in the closets, on top of cabinets, under the entertainment center. ( wow, you've made me realise how much space I could be storing food in!)

I have a small chest freezer that saves me a ton of money. I keep my flour there. And I pick up tons of discounted meat- chicken breasts .98/lb etc- and keep 'fast food' so I can avoid the drive thru's.

We bought a pantry from walmart and it is in our basement. Our basement is dry.

Our old apt was old and had 100 tiny closets. This one is new and doesn't have unnecessary storage. I have no basement, but I do have an outside utility closet that locks, a cabinet under the sink in my master bedroom and other than that I'm stuck. I can take pictures later. My apt is really awesome for living, not for storing things. Like I don't have enough space for a freestanding cabinet anywhere. There are 4 of us in 900 sq. ft., most of which is our master bedroom.

shelves around the ceiling? You could find decorative things to use for storage and put shelves abt 2 feet down from the ceiling?
