i need some syrup and thought I would use the hillbilly HW one. it calls for maple flavoring and butter flavoring (optional) are these necessary? can I use something else? vanilla or almond maybe?

I would guess you could use anything that sounds yummy to you!
Oh, and if you have honey, that's all we use in lieu of syrup and my kids LOVE it!

I used maple and vanilla, but you could just use vanilla. Whatever! Adding salt gave it the buttery taste, I though.

Maple flavoring really makes it taste like "real" store bought fake maple syrup (LOL). I always make sure I have some on hand.

Mapleine is maple flavouring. Or however you spell it. I don't know, it's just in the baking section with other extracts. I figured for $3 I would have enough in the bottle to make pancake syrup for a couple of years.
