Heather (herc)--I think you should look into it. If you can swing the money, it's a GREAT program. At least so far, I love it. Seriously, this would be a great program for all kids. It starts out pretty basic (I think Anders could do a lot of it, and I haven't really considered him gifted in math), but it moves quickly if they get it, and it's good to make sure there are no holes.

Erik begged to do 5 sessions. LOL! Heather (3boysnagirl), his first three sessions were 10 minutes each, but after viewing the report we just clicked on "run" again, and it let him do more. Sessions 4 and 5 were twenty minutes each. So he did 75 minutes of math. :lol: (it doesn't stop you immediately at the time limit, that's where those 5 extra minutes come from... just in case you thought that I needed to brush up on my math skills, too. :D)

It's very well-presented, and yes, it really breaks it down well. There's a game at the start of each session, working on quick computation. But otherwise it's really breaking down the concepts. In one hour he got up to 1st grade in all of the areas (it starts at the beginning), so I think I'm right that he'll breeze through the K-2. But as long as he loves it, that's fine with me. He's not bored yet, even though it's easy.

So now we have to decide how long to let him do math each day. It's true that it's math, but it's still screen time. He would have played even longer today (oh, and that was in two time periods, not all straight). I assume that eventually that excitement will wear down a bit, especially as he has to think about it more.

I'm so glad he likes it! I really appreciated that it started easy and worked up. Gives the kids the opportunity to learn the computer system without having to also be learning new concepts.

I ended up having them change the amount of time because Nate would get going, and the break would be enough to get him off.

When we first started Nathan was soooo excited to do it and kept logging in and doing more and more. The newness has worn off now, and he is starting to have to really THINK about some things - so he isn't as anxious to work on it. BUT... I have him log in every day and do at least one session. Usually he is so engrossed by the time it shuts off he doesn't realize it's been a full session.

Oh, and Nathan skips the math races. It only frustrates him to try to beat any clock. That method has never worked for him in ANYTHING. Instead of motivating, he just breaks down if we start counting or put on a timer.

It's a combined course, and they usually start them in the beginning of the combined course. So he'll probably start at the 5th grade - and while it's a lot review, it will give him the confidence and tie to figure out the way they do things. It is different that a typical math course.

Day 2--he got bored. ;) He still finished his session, and later on asked to do another one (but it was almost dinner then). He was having to do some very basic addition problems, a whole bunch in a row (3 things on one plate, 2 on the next, and 2 on the next--he had to type in the number of items on each place in a box below it, and then the total.) I just reminded him that every kindergartener starts at the same place, and they have to make sure he knows all the little pieces, and soon the math will be new learning stuff for him.
